She had her ear buds in, a lecture playing as she rode the train to visit her grandmother. She was glad the professor posted his lectures so they could listen to them again. Children’s Literature. Lillith was sure what had possessed her to take it. It was all about dissecting children’s stories. From Robert Munsch to Grimm’s fairy tales. It was an elective and she thought it would be an easy one. Something about it appealed to her. She couldn’t explain it.

The twenty two year old was about to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in biology. Next step, masters degree and then PhD. Lillith had a long term plan, goals that she had been working towards her whole life. She had worked two jobs in highschool, earned scholarships and studied hard to get to where she was. Her parents had died when she was young and she vowed to make her grandmother proud.

Her grandmother who had done so much for her. Her grandmother who she was on her way to visit. Lillith made time to go and see her every week. She owed her that and so much more. Visiting her was the least she could do.

The raven haired woman looked out the train window. The sun was starting to go down. In her ears her professor was talking about how fairy tales were used to scare children into behaving and there were examples of similar practices around the world.

Tales of scary monsters keep you from asking too many questions.

From a few rows back he was watching her. He was always watching her. He knew where she was going because he had been there only hours ago. It was a shame to have to kill the woman but she had fought back and in the end he reasoned that her death would send his target running to him. He would arrive, her hero and rock. He would help her and then she would be his. His and those he worked for.

The train pulled into the station and Lillith stood. The woman stood 5’6 and was a slim 122 lbs. Too much coffee, not enough real food. Her grandmother would lecture her about how she needed to eat better and how she had lost weight, too much weight. Lillith smiled to herself. She looked forward to the lecture and the fussing.

It wasn’t a long walk from the station and as Lillith began walking up the driveway she had the overwhelming feeling that something was wrong.
