Do you listen to Books on Tape/CD/MP3?

I like to listen while I commute (how many times can a person listen to NPR whine about how screwed up the world is anyway?), and I find that the reader makes all the difference.

For instance, the guy that usually reads Robert Ludlum's books is fantastic - he really draws you in.

The book I just listened to had such a bad reader that I'm still not sure whether or not the book sucked!

To me books on tape are just like the movies of my favorite books. I don't like them.

When I read a book I form my own character in my mind. I hear 'their' voice, and see 'their' face.

Then when the movie comes out it isn't my people that I am seeing, or hearing.

Remember Stephen King's The Stand when it came out as a mini-series back in what, 96? I was so upset with the actor selection. These were not my people. Especially Stu Redman. The only one I thought was right on was the dude from Coach Dawber, as Tom.

So anyhow. I just can't do books on tape.

I just finished my first called Hiding my Candy~ by Lady Champagne or some such (im too tired to look) she/he was a background character in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I think it brought real texture to it, to hear it read by the author. I might get another but nothing will replace curling up with my fave blanket, a cup of tea and a good book.

Lady Chablis!

She's from where I live! In fact, she was doing her cabaret act tonight at Club1 .Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil sucked ass! But it was written by a guy from Up North who was just slumming here for a while, so......

Actually, I need to take issue with myself for using the phrase "sucked ass" as a negative thing. Anyone have a more appropriate colorful phrase for me?

(Actually, I guess you knew the name of The Book; I need to read more carefully. I'm sorry.)

I should also be berated for starting two paragraphs in a row with the word actually.

I never read the Midnight but I have a thing about drag queens and I was drawn to this and I LOVE HER! She is so out there and straight up! And thanks for her name, I was driving myself crazy trying to think of it!

I've never listened to a book on tape, although I have had blind friends who have.

I'd like to

I've always wanted to read for the books on tape. It would be fun. Although, I'm sure my voice would get pretty tired.

The only way I can really read anymore is with either audio books or e books. I can't see very well anymore to be able to do the standard books, so it's either listen to 'em or enlarge the text on my pc screen. I don't mind it too much, because I can actually "read" while doing my daily chores. It's a pain in the ass tho when I'm sitting down. Listening puts me to sleep.

I'd much rather be able to hold it and look at it and pour over the pages the way I used to.

*sighs* :(
