Receiving propositions as feedback: How common is it?

I suppose this is something I should have expected, having submitted writing to an erotic fiction website, but it still takes me by surprise. I recently submitted my first story to this site, and two of the three feedback I have received are men trying to get me to talk to them - not about the story - but about myself. Now, I didn't join Literotica to find a man, lol. I joined to submit fiction and find out what I could do to make mine better. I don't blame the site for any of this, though. More or less, I blame my own naivete.

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone else (especially those more frequent authors of the group) have encountered this experience on here, and if so, how do you deal with it? I don't want to come off as a bitch, but I'm really not interested in starting an online relationship, casual or no. How would you guys recommend I handle this? Should I ignore them, or should I reply and gently tell them I'm not interested?

Well, it's never happened to me but from the comments in some of the ladie's personal profiles, I'm inclined to believe that it must happen regularly. I'd just put my unavailability in the PP and refer any would-be suitors to it.

I think if you're active either in the forums or on the New Story page that you will attract attention. If there's feedback about the story someplace in there, I'll respond to that portion. If it's simply someone trying out a pick up line, I ignore them and they usually go away. I certainly don't feel any obligation to respond to a stranger who only wants in my pants. ;)

I'm also curious to see what some of the more frequent authors experience.

It happens frequently. I haven't submitted a new story in ages and I still get the occasional 'personals feedback'. When I was submitting a new story a month or so I was getting them like everyday.... even when I was married and had that in my profile.

It's different for women, I think. Too many guys make the mistake that a woman who writes erotica will put out.

On the other hand, but not here on the AH, a lot of women will assume a man that writes erotica is a serial rapist and killer.

Humans have very strange ideas about sex. ;)

On subject. The closest I've come to being propositioned by a reader is someone writing me saying "I wish you were my Master" in response to one of my BDSM pieces.

I think it depends on the tone of the message. Some of them are very nice and are complimenting the story, as well. I respond to those. Thanks, but no thanks. If they make you uncomfortable, just ignore.

I've received a few propositions, including a woman who wanted me to come to Australia for a month. LOL. Anyway, aside from those, I've been asked to write stories for people with ideas but without writing ability. Most of the time, I just take these as compliments and leave it at that.

Yes, it does happen often.

Some readers are truly confused.

They just finish your story, they're aroused, so they PM you, sometimes asking, sometimes demanding, sometimes even begging for you to cyber chat with them to help finish them off.

The ones I usually get are along the lines of: Ur story is so hot! U R so hot! I am so horny right now! Do you cyber? Yahoo ID is ------.

While ordinarily I would be oh-so-charmed to receive such a message I don't usually respond. ;)

I got this one just last night:

hello
I am going to host a coed CAM masturbation party at between 10pm and 12 midnight mountain standard time. I will be online from 7pm and on, so let me know if you will be there. Cum and watch or preferrably participate via your own web cam. IM me here on lit or my handle on Yahoo IM is *********. I hope to see you there!!!

That one seems to be a generic message sent out to hundreds in hopes of a hit, not story related at all.

But it's strange. It's almost as if some readers believe the writers are waiting - just waiting - for the reader to contact them. And then we'll respond with more porn, more smut, until they're satisfied. As if we're sex for hire.

I do respond to the nice PMs, of course. And there's nothing wrong with saying that you're already in a relationship and that you maybe even write porn for your partner (that could help deflect).

But I always tell them I'm very glad they enjoyed the story. :)

Your manners, madam, are impeccable.

Wow, you had a man misunderstand your intentions and proposition you? Let's call "That's Incredible"!

I receive them fairly frequently--mostly from the stories posted to sites other than this one, though. I thank them for the interest in the story and just say that I have my hands full already with both cyber and real connections. Some go on for a while but they eventually peter out (so to speak :D).

*snerk*

:D

I get a lot of PC from men saying they want to chat. I won't do that but sometimes we exchange email. They rave about my AV and the pic in my bio and some even say they liked my stories. I haven't written any for a long time.

I'm not complaining, just responding to the thread.

I just ignore them - sometimes they're not even related to a story. They just see a new name (a woman's) and send off a PM.

If yours are in response to a story, at least you know you have the erotic part down! The time to worry is when you start getting prepositions in your feedback, as if to suggest that you don't know how to use them - up with that I will not put. Welcome to the AH, MissM!

advice

be sure that IF you provide an email link, it's NOT to your primary acct. set up a hotmail or other acct for feedback, propositions, wacko stuff.

I don't as Og.

Jeanne D'Artois, despite her profile stating that she's an imaginary person who is a nom-de-plume for a man, does.

The men making propositions even ignore her stated age.

Now that's a sad commentary on our sex, Og. Poor, inadequate chappies . . .

I get the occasional feedback or PM asking if I "cyber" now and then, after a reader has read one of my older (and more sex-oriented) stories. Apparently, my Lit name leaves some confusion as to my gender.

As well, from time to time, I'll get a PM from someone asking me if the picture in my AV is actually me. :p

I always respond with, "Yes, my girlfriend took the picture."

Understandable

Haven't got to your story yet, but the picture! I can understand the raves.
