Reasons MLB Sucks Ass

How is free agency different in sports than any other job?

Shit, if you get a better deal at another company you jump shit.

In the NBA and NFL it isn't that bad...both of those leagues have structured it so teams can really only make big supplements through the draft...

Same reason why I think sports in general are idiotic.

Saying things like that is why 60% of America is overweight.

Sports are a good thing..

It comes down to the idea of rooting for a team over the player.
The players come and go, but the team is still there. Some players decide to call it quits like Marino & Aikman, others like Jerry Rice continue on with a different team. It sucks, but that is where the money becomes more of an issue instead of what's best for the team.

Before there was free agency, there was indenturred servitude. You, above all people...

I don't know about other sports, but I know in the NBA the players original team usually has the most money to offer. That's why Webber stayed in sacramento, he was considering the knicks but htey just didn't have the money the knicks did.

And the NFL lets teams designate a franchise player that a team has to compensate with 2 first rounders and dough if they sign with them...

Also they can restrict some free agents and match offers...

Yeah, if more Americans sat around watching football, eating pork rinds, and drinking lite beer, we wouldn't have such a weight problem in this country.

More people should be playing sports...

Even if they suck at them...

I think that you mean "jump ship"

WANKER!!

I started to have a couple of tears watching "the DREAM, the Nigerian Nightmare" Hakeem Olajuwon's retirement ceremony. That was until Rudy took the mic and did started doing the RUDY SHAKE. Olajuwon is on ESPN Classic sports all day today. I plan on giving it a long watch. Incredible run, being lifelong Houston sports fan, he's the best guy to remember. Excitement followed Moon and Commander Cody was tough as nails (lol) but Hakeem IS Houston. Too bad he's Muslim...

I hate professional sports these days. The main reason is free agency. I hate it that players that you have watched and cheered on for a team for years, can just up and move to that team's main rival. It makes no sense. You go from rooting for a player who plays for your favorite team, to watching him go play for a team you absolutely despise.

How can a sport expect to have avid fans when shit like this happens. I cannot fucking believe that Tom Glavine, the Braves pitcher, may end up playing for the fucking Yanks. I mean c'mon, how many times did the Braves lose to the Yanks in the World Series in the last 10 years? And now, he's going to go play for the assholes?

Glavine has played his entire career for the Braves. The Braves have changed a great deal since being acquired by AOL-TimeWarner. It has always been a rather soulless team, very businesslike. That suited players like Glavine and Maddux just fine. They went about their business.

But now AOL is limiting the money the team can spend and creating an atmosphere similar to that of the Cubs. Owned by a large media coproration who likes the TV revenue but wont foster team chemistry. its a cold team. I'd be leaving too.

The Yanks are not the Braves main rivalry. that a gross exaggeration. The Mets and Phillies are both more significant rivals.

Glavine is from the Northeast. he was raised here. Its not that surprising that he would consider the New York teams, the red Sox, etc. I have heard word that the Phillies may make a bid for his services, to which he seems receptive. It will be interesting.

Glavine is not someone like A-rod who will take the most money through collusion with an owner and agent. he is looking for the right fit, and yes money does play a part, as well as wanting to win and be competitive.

I think you're off-base here. A much better example is how Paul Byrd will leave KC.

Curt Flood was right. The players are not to fault for free agency.

I talked about free agency with an ex-tackle for the Jets about two years ago. He had been a fifth-round choice from a local major college, made the team, played two years, and got out while he still had his health. He was huge - "down" to about 275 and six and a half feet tall.

He said that ownership had encouraged all the jumping ship that occurs these days. We chatted about it for a bit, and I found myself agreeing with him. The current state of pro sports wouldn't be what it is without management decisions which make it so.

It's still amazing to watch Jerry Rice be a factor at his age.

So, I have been thinking about your post, Lavender.

If I was a Braves fan perhaps i would be a bit angry at the potential loss of Glavine. I don't want to discount your right to be peeved. But Glavine has not bad-mouthed the Braves organization. It seems the Bravees have not made much of a push to keep Glavine and/or Maddux. This is either because theya re resigned to having lost them or simply don't have the money to sign one or both of them.

No baseball fan wants to see players from their team go to the Yankees. Its kind of a slap int he face. I can understand how that would piss you off.

From what I have read, its not likely that Glavine will go to the yankees. Steinbrenner wants Clemens to finish his career in NY, despite Brian Cashman not wanting to have Clemens back. By the time that situation is resolved I think Glavine will be signed elsewhere.

The biggest loss will be if the Braves turn Smolts back inot a starter. I think that will signal the end of his carer whereas as a closer he could easily have 3 more solid seasons.

I'm sorry. I thought the correct answers would be:

1) Bud Selig
2) All-Star game TIE
