Obviously, and unarguably, the recent school shooting incident in Connecticut had ZERO to do with gun ownership rights.

Various legitimate theories have been proposed to explain it however. These include violent movies and video games, the breakdown of societal morals and the family structure, post-industrial economic decline fueled by "free" trade, mass immigration and multiculturalism, the lack of death penalty for violent crimes, and feminism and anti-male sexism.

What viable theory do you propose?

The shooter had mental health issues AND had access to multiple guns.

Without both, there would have been no shooting.

I don't think it's the lack of the death penalty. Connecticut does have one. but has hardly used it since the 70's. However, the state of Texas has made very good use of it. But still has a lot of violent gun crimes there.

an over abundance of guns, people with guns, ammunition and targets. fewer people with less guns would reduce the amount of mass shootings.

an easy way to achieve this would be to arm everyone and make mass shooting compulsory. population levels would plummet, or at least fall, and huge numbers of deaths would be harder to achieve.

Now that's what I call thinking outside the box.

Oddly, your sense of humour is more on target than you thnk. All problems the world is experiencing today; from war to drug abuse to school massacres can all be spiraled out to just too many fucking people in the world...

Women, brown people, Marilyn Manson and Halo 3 caused mass shootings....absolutely, and you wonder why people laugh at the right wing.

I'm still trying to figure out how the death penalty would deter someone who's willing to die by their own hand after committing a crime.

"You know what would stop you from eating ice cream? A pint of ice cream."

really? its obvious, too many people with guns with too many targets.

too many people with wrong ideas.. drug users, drug importers, terminally ill people, drug users with guns AND mental health issues, terminally ill people with a bad drug habbit AND a gun.. the list goes on. mass shootings are one thing, it's only a matter of time before one of 'em goes nuclear.

identify them pre birth, then drown them after birth.

sugar can cause aggression btw.

That's too extreme.

It'd also deprive us of some of Lit's most colorful members...*coughpresentcompanycough*

No problem. i can swim and hold my breath for quite some time.

to be seriously extreme would consist of prebirth tests, such as dna, parental lineage, etc and include abortion. Since abortion is immoral post birth drowning would suffice.

care to elaborate how free trade and feminism are to blame for this?

neither makes a lick of sense

Marc Lepine blamed feminism for his gunning down of 14 women, but that's only because his father had raised him to hate women

I fail to see how it could be used as an excuse here

as for the breakdown of societal moarls... Socrates first complained about that 2300 hundred years ago... that's not an explanation, its an excuse

the dealth penalty means nothing, as it hasnt been shown to deter these kinds of crime... otherwise Texas would'nt have murders

I propose it is because some people believe a gun will make a person safe in the face of a threat. This is a seductive argument for the weak and the weak minded.

It is easy to believe a gun will give one power and all those mean people will have to pay attention, or they'll be sorry.

People believe the lies about guns because it is easier to accept than the truth about themselves. They would rather create new lies about reakdown of societal morals and the family structure, post-industrial economic decline fueled by "free" trade, mass immigration and multiculturalism, the lack of death penalty for violent crimes, and feminism and anti-male sexism

Cruise missiles let us use an eraser, when before our only option was to pull the blackboard off the wall and burn down the building.

Does Commander Greer have a regular Navy crew, or some special James Bond villain grade lesbian crew?

my thoughts

A gun is a tool. It is a device that has several uses. Just as many other things in our society.

The automobile kills as many as the fire are each year. Arson killes some each year. How many OD on illigal drugs? Illegal means to possess them is a crime. After years of a war on drugs it appears the government is losing. So if you outlay guns will only outlawys have guns?
Mexico has more stringlent gun laws that the US and read about all the kills there.

Per the internet the highest rate of murders with a firearm falls on DC with 16 murders per 100,000 people. DC isn't that our capital?

In 2007 there were 31,224 firearm related deaths. Of that 17,352 were suicides, (59.5%) that makes 12,632 murders. Again that is 2007 figures. In 2002 there were 42,815 deaths on the national highways. The info I found didn't breakdown the number of accidents that had alcohol contributing to the cause.

To me the problem is not the gun anymore than it is the gasoline's fault that arsonists brun buildings or whisky distillers fault a man drinks and drives. It is all personal choice.

As far as saying the death penalty will not stop a murders, especially one that is ready to take his own life, that is true. But it will stop some, those not ready to die. That can be easily proven. How many play blindman's bluff on the top of a 10 story building? How many try and swim with a 30 pound pack on their back? How many grab hold of an electrified wire? How many people pick up a glowing red piece of metal? Not many because they know there will be imediate, painful, and possibly fatal consequiences. Even a crazy man won't willingly step off that ten story building. So if a man knew he would die for murder just as sure as stepping off that building, most wouldn't do it. But if the man was ready to die it wouldn't stop him in the least.

To me the problem lies with the value we place on human life. The average time spent in prison for murder in the US several years ago was just over 7 years. To me that is saying life is cheap.
I wish I could find the stats on repeat offenders for murder but didn't find it in a quick search. But I know of one off hand Kenneth McDuff. He was convicted of three murders and placed on death row. The US Supreme Court struck down the death penalty so his sentence was changed to life without parol. Well he got parolled. He was later tried for 3 three more murders and sent back to death row. He was executed. But during his time out he was linked to 14 murders. Had he been dispatched the frist time there would be 14 people alive today that died at his hand.

Now since so many are against capital punishment and for abortion.....can we just call it ( an execution) a retroactive abortion? It would work for me...

We will never be able to control the evil in some people. All we can do is make the crime not with the time.

Just my thoughts

Jack

And I suspect that we're going to find that he was, or has been, on prescription psychotropic drugs.
