CNN has smallest weekly primetime audience in advertiser-coveted demo in over 30 years

CNN’s primetime lineup has failed to resonate with viewers

But CNN’s more alarming issue comes in the key demo of adults age 25-54, where the network finished with its smallest primetime audience among the in over 30 years.

CNN settled for only 80,000 total viewers among the demo, compared to 150,000 for Fox News during total day.

During the hours of 8-11 p.m. ET, CNN managed only 84,000 average viewers among the demo compared to 219,000 for Fox News. The last time CNN’s primetime audience was so tiny among the critical category was prior to the week of Sept. 30, 1991 – which is as far back as Fox News can track.

CNN’s primetime lineup has failed to resonate with viewers, and a gaping hole at 9 p.m. ET continues to cause problems as the network has still not named a permanent replacement since Chris Cuomo was fired in 2021. Recently, CNN has been airing a series of specials and town halls that have struggled to find an audience.

CNN news: 914,000 viewers
Fox Entertainment: 2.176m
MSNBC: 1.46m
BBC News: 18m

So when will reality come to Fox News? I might watch if it did.

Fox News Chanel, you mean the fifth rated US news source? (Oops, they always specify ‘cable news source’ don’t they?) 🤔

Is this “news” viewership or total viewership? Lumping networks that broadcast NFL, NBA, College Football & Basketball and other major sports and entertainment with networks like Fox News, MSNBC, and Hallmark is apples and oranges.

Why do you care? Are you gloating because your propaganda is more marketable?

Fox News has dominated prime time cable news and opinion programming for years. MSNBC is competitive in some slots. CNN owns the airport terminals.

Out of a 300m population, 2.176m viewers for the top rated 'news' broadcaster is pathetically low. It's embarrassing to see people gloat about such small fingers, (sorry figures).

The military amounts to 1.3m, all chowing down in front of a TV tuned to Fox. So around half of the viewers are compulsory.

Oh, that’s right. It’s only for “cable news networks” and only for the “Prime Time” slot and only about viewers in the ideal demographic. ✅

So retirees don’t count, (edit - women are included) , nor anyone who watches news in the afternoon instead of the evening.

And since we’re only focusing on news, let’s point out that while the the bulk of conservative dupes choose FOX, the rest of America splits their viewership between several other sources.

You boomers flex over the dumbest shit. And you wonder why your country is a laughing stock?

My question wasn’t about cable “news” vs other “news.” The question is does this ranking compare “news” broadcasting only, or does it include sports and entertainment?

My understanding is that it includes only the “primary advertising target demographic,” who watch “Cable news” at “prime time” though I could be mistaken.

Still, many more people get their news from places other than the disgrace that is FOX News.

You’ve made your point. Sports and entertainment categories draw far more viewers than the news category.

It means that FOX News can charge more for advertising during their opinion shows than other cable news channels but they may still rate lower than other forms of entertainment. 👍

No argument with your other point. ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News, MSNBC, CNN and other broadcast news networks are a waste of time.

Yep. They crush their competitors in the ratings which drive ad revenues.

CNN went back to balanced talking heads
Whereas it used to be 4 to 2
Then none for a while
Now it’s 2 to 2

I can’t listen to them allowing anyone to lie

Many of them are. I can’t stand the current “talking head” style of news broadcast where a host makes a few opening statements then invites several regular commentators to chime in. Though they sometimes get a specific guest for the topics, they are rarely qualified commentators for the subject matter.

Right wingers hate Rachael Maddow and call her the Left wing equivalent of Carlson, but she’s an actual journalist.

If you disagree it’s probably because she’s pissed you off. She’s only on on Mondays now, her last episode started with politicians who have been prosecuted for various crimes, showing how criminal justice goes after crime regardless of power and party and that it isn’t the end of the world when justice prevails.

Of course she was making the point that Trump can be prosecuted regardless of the fact that he’s a former president, but she did it by presenting precedence and fact, not by having some talking head come and spout their opinions as fact.

When Maddow asks guests questions she asks for clarification, not confirmation. Carlson and many other anchors start up a bandwagon and call in the clowns to jump on.

Maddow, Hannity, Tucker, Tapper, Lemon, Cooper, etc. are blow hards. Waste of time.

I agree will all except for Maddow. Truly, she’s got her opinions but she presents a real and informative show.

Accurate criticism of her would be that she focuses on her perspectives, but she supports her views with facts, key player interviews, and historical context.

Hannity and Tucker are carnival barkers who make shit up from whole cloth, Tapper comes in with an axe to grind, and Cooper does the talking head thing.
