Reads, Votes and Comments

I found this rather interesting. Do any other authors who have submitted chapter stories run into this?

First I must add that this is very uncommon to have such a low amount of reads on a LW story. My first chapter Was EC and the following four were LW.
Ch.2 had nearly double the reads of chapter one.

Chapter 3 and 4 fell way down but chapter 5 picked back up some. Scores were all rather low though about 4.00+ with ch.5 being the highest. Voting was about the same for all but the last chapter which could easily explained by not wanted to vote till they read the whole story.

Do readers hit and miss on reading chapter stories. How can anyone know what happened in the between chapters. This was the first time that I've seen later chapters getting more votes then the first one. Maybe the low reads was they didn't care for the story, just odd to see this. I did post this story on two other sites and they were rated rather high. I did post it here on Lit first.

Anyone else have an opinion? By the way, I think this was one of my better stories. Just an opinion.

At least initially the views go down and the ratings go up as my chaptered stories spin out. Then over time the ratings tend to come back up on the initial chapters. I post in categories where there are few comments. The comments I tend to have on chaptered stories are one or two readers who comment on each chapter as the story progresses.

I received an email from a man who said he really liked the most recent chapter of a story I posted, and that he was planning on going back and reading the previous chapters to see what he missed.

Perhaps the LW crowd has no interest in reading the back chapters since they aren't in LW? I don't think it's that unusual; I might refuse to watch a movie that's half over, but I know plenty of people who have no problem with that.

But no, I'm not sure what's going on there.

One of the reasons I asked the question was some of the comments asked about a sequel. I started writing one until I wondered what group of people would read it? If I had low readers views in the main story I had to wonder how many people would pay any attention to the sequel.

Maybe this story reader turnout was somewhat of a fluke. I may just sit on a sequel for awhile and see about submitting one later. I've just never had this kind of fluctuations before. Thanks to those of you who commented.

The reason the number of reads jumps isn't all that mysterious. People click through to the last listed chapter to make sure the story is actually complete before reading.

First chapters have more views because of people giving it a chance.

Everything in the middle is the people you've caught in your net for the long haul.

Voting falls off after the first chapter because not everybody who reads 1 is going to continue. Voting jumps again at the end because many people only vote on the whole story, and usually use the last chapter to cast that vote.

The scores rise because those who continue reading are already in your net. They like the story, or they wouldn't keep reading.

I'm not chicken as far as LW goes but the category has no interest for me. I can't even come up with a decent plot bunny to try one.

On the other hand I don't take my incest scores to seriously as, to me it is a very easy to please audience. With the incest crowd it is all buzzwords. Example:

"I stared transfixed by the sight of Allison's beautiful rose colored nipples"

Erotic Couplings version. so-so whatever.

Now Incest.

"I stared transfixed by the sight of my sister's beautiful rose colored nipples"

Oh that's hot! 4.65!

Now for the record? The biggest draw in the incest:

4.8+ Mother/son the hottest draw in LIt's largest category.

If you have patience here are mine from my soap opera like "Siblings with Benefits"

The views are lower because of the length and also keep in mind that I have a single brother/sister "combo" not the multiple sibling orgies that really drive the views and votes. My storyline is also not for everyone as it features, hardcore BDSM sex and the characters were both abused as children, the sister was addicted to coke and alcohol for years, and the brother is a practicing Satanist so I have done what I could to eliminate mainstream popularity.

But watch how the votes seem to bump up around chapter 30 and up.

First chapters have more views because of people giving it a chance.

Everything in the middle is the people you've caught in your net for the long haul.

Voting falls off after the first chapter because not everybody who reads 1 is going to continue. Voting jumps again at the end because many people only vote on the whole story, and usually use the last chapter to cast that vote.

The scores rise because those who continue reading are already in your net. They like the story, or they wouldn't keep reading.

I agree with that Dark, that's why I was so perplexed on my totals. I had double the reads on my second chapter over the first. Also the LW crowd is usually a rather large one but total reads, even at the hightest was low for that category.

I do see that a few others have had mixed reads also. Especially in the very long stories. The comments were decent for a multi-chapter story. Ch. 5 had 27 at the writing. But, under 10,000 reads for a LW story seemed rather odd. It was as I said earlier, a pretty good story. The score was low but that is always a mixed bag when submitting in LW.

Some categories are actually biased against chapter stories as well. Many of them, actually. If you look at the toplists, some categories are dominated by chapters, while others have at least equal numbers of one-shots.

When you consider the score-rising factor of chapters, having even an equal number of one shots on the all-time toplist shows a strong bias toward one-shot stories. Loving Wives is one of those categories.

In those categories that have one-shot bias, the higher the number of chapters, the more your readership seems to fall off. You announced right from the get-go that you had five chapters. In a biased category, three seems to be the limit before your reads drop off the cliff.

Your dominant reader base seems to be one-shot. Your list is dominated by one-shots, so any time you post chapters, those readers are going to hesitate.

However, you have a very large and very loyal reader-base.

In the end, what you have are low views, but a very high vote to view ratio because of your reader-base.

Hey Zeb, that was pretty damn impressive. I have other multi chapter stories that did well also. It was just that on this last one that the reads were low and later chapters got more reads then the early chapters.

One of my multi chapter stories got a W. At least is was on the first chapter. LOL I'm still not found of single chapters winning contests but it's not my decision to make.

Here's the results of one I wrote back in 2005. Decent scores and lots of reads. I guess I've always gotten a lot of comments.
