Is there an established pattern of what percentage of readers will vote on a story?

I would assume that average stories (or slightly below average) are voted on less frequently. Being average invites lassitude.

Thanks!

Most will tell you that 1 vote per 100 is about average.

1 of my stories approximately adheres to that rule. The other doesn't, coming in with 1 vote per 40 views. Interestingly enough the one with 40 votes per views has a lower rating that the one with 100 votes/views but both are above 4.

Readers is weird.

People cite numbers like 60-100 views/vote. My stories range mostly between 50 and 200 views/vote. There may be a very rough tendency for views/vote to decline with higher ratings, but my highest-rated story breaks that trend. It has more than 400 views/vote.

There are a lot of factors other than the rating that stimulate readers to vote.

I only have five stories in four different categories, and my vote:view ratio breaks down like this...
1:60
1:64
1:100
1:54
1:72

Because of the sample size and the variety, you can't really draw any conclusions from this. But I would say that 1:100 is a pretty good rule of thumb for a baseline.

1 vote per hundred was about average when I first started posting stories. Since then, things have been all over the place. My last story had one vote for every twelve views. Outrageous and startling. Especially since it was in the non-erotic category.

Category, the story itself, day of the week, initial score. All have an effect. Even having a following helps.

There is no average average.

I've written 16 stories in 5 categories. My average vote:view ratio is 1:85, with a low of 1:181 and a high of 1:45.

My most hated and worst-rated story is the one that has gotten by far the most votes per view, 1 out of 45. I see no correlation between the popularity of the story, either in terms of views or rating, and the vote:view ratio.

There definitely IS a correlation between the length of the story and the vote:view ratio. The shorter a story is, the more likely viewers are actually to read the whole thing and vote on it. My second shortest story has the highest ratio of votes to views, and my second longest story has the lowest.

The category seems to matter. Loving Wives readers have itchy voting fingers and seem to be more apt to vote on a story (usually to give it a bad vote) than readers in other categories. My Exhibitionist and Voyeur stories have the lowest vote to view ratios.

I've found that the vote per view ratio is, for my stories, going down the longer time passes since publication. Six months ago, shortly after I'd published a flurry of stories, it was 1 out of 76, and now it's 1 out of 85. So it seems to be trending toward 1 out of 100, which some others have said is the norm.

I get about 1 comment per 4200+views. Comments are few and far between.

I get about 1 favorite per 743 views.

Certain categories have a higher ratio. Incest is high, anal is low

My rule of thumb (across 65 pieces, one a 23 chapter shaggy dog story) is a pretty consistent 1:100, with comments maybe 1:1000. If my comments count jumps, I know I've hit a chord.

Mine are unusually low then. They range from 1:42, with several others under the 1:100, then quickly rise from the low 1:100s to my worst - 1:554 (of 40 submissions to date).

Do you think this indicates people start reading and drop out? These low vote stories are for the most part longer (4-17 pages long), but in the middle of my stats are a large number of 2-pagers getting pretty dismal votes and feedback compared to 'views'.

The story most reviled, according to the stats, is one I'm quite proud of (personally) https://www.literotica.com/s/nate-meets-jesse-for-the-first-time ... but it has unintentional half-brother incest, in GM, which... it turns out, is not people's favourite thing. Who knew? I guess I do, now.

It has just under 14,000 views (very high for me) and only 25 votes.

There is a warning at the beginning, so they should know what they're getting into. But then, it is 4 pages. Maybe they just really super enjoy the first two pages and then forget to vote? *clears throat*

My best view:vote ratio comes from a story I posted in non-erotic. There may not be many views there, but the ones you do get seem way more apt to vote than elsewhere. :)

For my story that has a very high views/vote ratio, I think it's because readers drop out. A lot of readers pick it up hoping for a quick, juicy read but that's not what it is. It's eight Lit pages and it's a dense read--not just long, but dense. It also has a squirk factor that some people will bail on.

But then, the few people who manage to wade to the end actually like it. What surprises me is that so few voters have bombed it.

My guess is that the warning that precedes your story caused an unusual number of people to decide not to read it, thus the low number of votes per views. Incest + gay is a combo that a lot of readers don't want to touch.

So it would seem.

But still, an unusual number of people also looked at it. It averaged 146 views per day over 95 days (high for me). Of 40 submissions, only 5 are higher in views over that kind of period, of which two are comp entries, and one's a one pager.

It's curious. Perhaps one of the key words is bringing them to it. Key word analysis is next. :p I suspect 'first time' might be the key, then, as you say, they take a look, read the disclaimer and click out.

It's the only place it will get read, though. At least without being bombarded with hate.

Thankfully, Laurel has decided to allow GM Incest to be posted to GM again. It was really taking a beating in the Incest category.

The warning probably did cause people who opened it ( triggering a view ) to back away without finishing and voting. Thankfully, it's a category that's tolerant of a wide range of topics. In some categories, a warning like that is a signpost the readers use to bash the story without bothering to read it.

*cough* Loving Wives *cough*
