"[Slavery] was established by decree of Almighty God...it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation...it has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts." Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America 1,2

those who want to kill, or at least beat and/or maim this guy, please for a line behind me..

So then, Mr. Davis, You won't mind then if Mistress and I tie you up in a cold, ucky basement, give each other hot, groping, snuggling oral sex in front of you, giving you the biggest hard-on of your life and then leave you deprived and wanting for weeks on end, feeding you only oatmeal and cottage cheese?

Do you Really want to quote the Bible????

According to the old testament, I can sell my daughter into slavery. What do you think would be a fair price for a 13 year old virgin?

According to the old testament, no work can be done on the Sabath (is that Saturday or Sunday?) you can operate no equipment,(that would include your car), you may only walk so far and you must attend Temple.

According to the old testament, if I ask to borrow money, land or cattle from you, you must give me what I ask and charge me no interest and if I don't pay you back in 7 years you must forgive the debt.

According to the old testament, any person found committing adultry should be taken outside the city walls and stoned to death. If you are caught stealing, your hands should be cut off. If you kill someone, his family is within their rights to kill you unless you can make it to a safe city, where you have to spend the rest of your life.

You tell me, you ready to live by Old Testament laws????

So the lesson here is: don't get caught. ;)

Quite a leap of faith there Mr. J. Davis! Your jump from using the word "highest" to mean 'most advanced' to something which hints at being 'morally superior' or 'best' is quite breathtaking.

I've tried to think of it this way: leave aside criticisms of the Bible for the moment, and accept the quote given (even though I don't know for sure if it is out of context). God says slavery is okay. Does He give a definition of slavery and slave conditions? I'm not being controversial for the sake of it, just appraising what you say while trying to keep my mind open to alternatives. So, this 'divine law' would surely be applicable to all God's children - so if you are ever enslaved, remember to give thanks to Almighty! Biblical examples have been given which challenge your theory (by willy, for example); but what about 'positive' Biblical God given laws? Surely a conflict of interests will arise when trying to enslave others and living a 'Christian' life?

I've came at this from a different direction to disprove the idea you offer. Others have taken alternative approaches to arrive at the same fundamental conclusion. Jefferson Davis would appear to be a slave to the written word. This can be the worst form of slavery there is; the inability to break free from the bonds of ignorance, and being reliant and obedient to a 'Master' (read this as a metaphor if that helps), no matter how repugnant the outcomes. Read your history books, it's a revelation ...

First lemme say I agree that Dixon is funnnnny! lol

Now on a more serious note....
I cannot believe this topic was posted!!! According to the old testament, a father is to take on his sons wife as his on should he pass away. I won't even approach the issue of homosexuality in ref. to the bible. Thou shalt not murder. (Enter the death penalty) I could go on and on....but I won't. I think that with times things change. Maybe so..maybe not. But I'm living in 2001...thankyouverymcuh.

Ciao!
