Reactions to the 2014 SOTU Address

I am the smartest person I know, and I'm also the smartest person anyone who knows me knows, but you've stumped me on this one.

If the word marriage were used by a same sex couple and this results in a weakening of your commitment to honor God, I have to say you have a very strange concept of commitment and probably of God, as well.

Are you drinking?

Alcohol is the tool of the devil! My guess is prescription drugs.

The (Real) Socialist State of the Union.

by jpmassar

Recently elected Seattle City Councilperson Socialist Alternative party member Kshama Sawant gave a somewhat impromptu response to President Obama's State of the Union speech last night.

As best I can determine, a twitter suggestion to the effect that she do so yesterday afternoon let to a twitterstorm of retweets, ultimately resulting in this livestreamed video.

Here is her response to the President, with a partial transcript.

My brothers and sisters.
...

Poverty is at record high numbers. 95% of the gains... have gone to the top 1%.

Obama's focus on income inequality is an admission of the falure of his own policies. And this admission has been forced by rallies, demonstrations and strikes by fast food and low wage workers demanding a minimum wage of $15.

While the criminals of Wall Street are bailed out courageous whistleblowers like Edward Snowden are hunted down while the unconstitutional acts he exposed are allowed to continue...

... the President continues to intensify a brutal campaign of drone attacks in multiple countries killing hundreds of innocent civilians...

Climate change is getting worse and worse on his watch. The leadership in stopping the disastrous Keystone Pipeline has come not from him, or from Congress, but from 1000's of courageous activists...

Obama shouts "Fix our broken immigration system." Yet he is the President with a record number of deportations...

Working people have faced nearly four decades of wage stagnation and rising income inequality. Four decades which show that neither party is capable of solving hese problems, and that they fundamentally represent the same interests - the interests of the superwealthy and big corporations...

We need a break from the policies of Wall Street and corporate America. We need a break from capitalism. It has failed the 99%.

Both parties bow down and serve their corporate masters. The political system is completely dysfunctional... We, the 99%, have no political voice or representation.

...

President Obama has said that no one working should have to raise a family in poverty. And his solution, a $10.10 minimum wage... But let's be honest. A $10.10 minimum wage over the next three years... for those who are lucky to have a full time job is not a ticket out of poverty...

"Let's make this a year of action." Obama said. The action we need is by working people for higher wages and a $15/hr minimum wage. Action by young people fighting against student debt, tuition hikes and a broken education system. We need action by homeowners against the epidemic of foreclosures. We need action by trade unionists against anti-union laws and for workers' rights...

Join the struggle... the epicenter of the fight back in 2014 will be the Fight for $15.

So, the fight is to get $15 minimum wage, right?

I am curious as to what these people think will happen? Do they think everything else will remain the same and they will just end up with more money because of a paycheck?

Let's say, for example, McDonalds did this and raised the wages to $15/hour. They are a company. To make up for the money going to the workers, they would then raise prices.

At this point, the consumer will make a decision as to whether or not they want to pay higher prices for the same food. If enough consumers decide they do not want to do this, McDonalds will then have to make another decision on how to pay the higher wages and still make a profit with less products being sold.

Like it or not, if companies do not make a profit, they will not stay in business. So, if they profits plummet and McDonalds has to close, these workers are now making Zero wages (yes there is always unemployment, but that too is no $15/hour).

So please explain to me, other than feeling "good" about the $15/hour, exactly what do these people think this will accomplish if they end up with no job?

Somebody doesn't understand "price inelasticity". Guess it wasn't in the Bible, so she didn't need to know it....

In the small city of Liberty Lake, Wash., the sole McDonald’s restaurant sells a Big Mac Value Meal for $6.09 before taxes.

Six milesup Interstate 90, in Post Falls, Ida., the same value meal costs the same $6.09 pre-tax.

Washington state’s minimum wage is $9.32 an hour.

Idaho’s is set at $7.25 an hour.

If McD's can't afford to not be subsidizing their workforce on the tax payers dime (which you, vette, and the rest of the Republitard crew seem to support) then they can't afford to do business, it's just that fucking simple.

But then again you republicans have always been suckers for welfare.....as long as it's going to the rich.

If they are unable to make a profit, they will not do business. It is that simple.

I am sharing my opinion. If gays wanted a Civil Union and had all the rights as a traditional marriage, I would have ZERO problem with that.
So you'd have no problem with the huge amounts of money required to do that? You know, to change all those federal, state, local and private business documents.

oh, the left wing circle jerk is still going.....how sad.

Thank God, you people don't have real lives. You could do damage out in society

you may now continue on with your non happy ending

Again....MY opinion here....

Marriage is, to me, a very sacred and GOD HONORING commitment. I know marriage is not necessarily seen as that to others, but that word is incredibly important to me.
Oh crap, that means my wife and I aren't really married, since we got married by a judge. :(
Or, at least if you had your way, we wouldn't have been allowed to get married.
And Buddhists, among many others who don't believe in god, wouldn't be allowed to get married if you had your way.

You mean like the time that you put me on ignore because I have more real estate than you ever will?

how goes the State of Ill debt? gotta love it when you have fucktard demoncrats in office. spend baby spend!

when will your kind start to pay, YOUR fair share? at least get off the welfare so that they can cut expenses

If paying their employees instead of relying on the tax payer to do so destroys their profit, then fuck them they don't have a business and should be allowed to go belly up.

The cost of that companies labor should be paid for by that companies consumer, not the public coffers.

Why are you so pro welfare for the rich?

Nope....she's a conservative/patriot/freedom lover of convenience. Her and Vette should get together.
