Dear Sis,

Well, here I am. We just got back from supper, but they call it the Mess Hall here in the Army. It seems strange not having milked the cows first and even stranger to not have anything to do when there's still daylight left. The corporal who took us to supper said that's what it means to be 'off duty.' Being in the Army is almost like being back in grammar school. We all walk together in one group everywhere. Eyes front, hands at our sides and someone takes us to and from where we're going.

Today was a whirlwind. As soon as we stepped off the bus, anybody with stripes on their shoulder (whom we quickly learned were gods) started barking orders at us. We were measured for new, well everything. It was like an assembly line through a free McGinty's department store - only everybody got the same thing.

The guys here are great so far. We come from all over. Even had one from New York City. He joked wanting to know what it was like growing up fighting Indians. Another guy I ate with says he's from the South Side of Chicago. He had a good laugh when I asked him about the East Side.

Taps is playing so I have to go to bed – they say they're testing us tommrow. What about I don't know but I guess I'll find out soon enough. I'll write more later, tell everyone I miss them.

Love,
Jack
