Re: Voting on Stories

Not that anyone would do this, but what's to stop a writer from voting for his own story 50 times over, thus amassing
massive votes...? :)

Laurel's leather lined paddle, she's watching you know...

Honestly, I imagine nothing other than a sense of fair play. I thought the purpose of voting was to allow the author to see what the readers think of his or her work. If the author votes, what's the point?

Under the current setup, there's nothing that stops voting fraud.

An example:

I notified LAurel that one set of pictures had bad links from all of the thumbnails. i.e. no one was able to see the full size pictures. I waited a couple of days to give the submitter a chance to notice, although I noticed the day the were posted.

Apparently, the submitter was too busy voting to look at the pictures, because they were in the top ten list by the time I let Laurel know the full size pictures weren't linked.

Under the new setup that's in the works, the scripts do two things. They track votes by members and total votes separately, and they won't let a memeber vote more than once for the same picture, even if they have a user name, and and author name. (i.e. Weird Harold or Dirty Old MAn can vote on a story, but not both.)

Does that work if a person clears out the cookies and temp. internet files? Just curious, I haven't voted once or even paid attention to the voting.

I thought it was already that way. Damn, now my sense of right and wrong are kicking in! LOL I wanna put one of the kitty pics in the top ten, but I can't do it. It's not right.

I'd explain it all better but I have to go vote for "Teaching Patti" again. And again. And Again. And again...

Dixon dear you dont need to keep voting for Teaching Patti I vote for it everytime i reread it which is at least once a week!!

I think it does, I will check it out next time I'm there helping with the debugging. Thanks for the thought.

What WH said.

Currently, if you vote for a story once, any votes you make within 24 hours won't count. Our current voting script is good, but every script has its flaws. This is why we've been hesitant to do fun stuff like offer prize money and goodies for stories with votes.

With the new script in place, you'll be able to log in to Literotica as a member. You don't have to be a member to enjoy the site, but only member votes will count toward any contests. The new script is bulletproof as far as voting fraud goes - there's no way for anyone to vote twice. We plan on eventually having monthly contests - "Best Group Sex Story", "Best Fetish Story", "Best Erotic Haiku/Sonnet/Free Verse"... We're still working on the details, but only stories submitted during that month specifically for the contest will be eligible. There will be cash prizes for 1st and 2nd place, and probably gift certificates or goodies for 3rd and 4th. We'll still have our end-of-the-year Best Of, but this will be a monthly fun thing to help reward our writers.

Hope that helps. :)

Yes it does, because it doesn't use cookies or temp files. It operates on a totally different principle.

Wow! I come home from work and find all these replies!
Thanks for your input, it's been helpful.

I have a question or several

Does this mean if you vote a story as a ‘zero’ every day that you can knock it off the top 20? Are all the stories on the top 20 current voted up on the charts every month or every two weeks? What happened to the Ladies Lawn mower story? It was great and number one then disappeared. I was also curious as to how many people have read Whispersecrets story. Its number one in my book. Laurel, can you tell me how many people have read it?
