Razzy and I thought it'd be a cool idea if we had a reading group here on Lit. :)

The idea is we start with a book.... and all read it.. and then discuss it. It can ve done in multi convos on MSN or Yahoo.. or just a few from the group... even comments in the thread... all I as is you do NOT give any plot spoilers to people who haven't read as far as you.

I propose we start with a novel called 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire. I have Foof ( ) to thank for recommending the book. She raved about it so much, and I only got it to please her...but I have just started it and BOY am I enjoying it, (and I have not even seen the Oz movie all the way through.. so no in-depth knowledge is needed, though it helps). So thank you wonderful Foof. :rose:

Synopsis
An astonishingly rich re-creation of the land of Oz, this book retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all. Taking readers past the yellow brick road and into a phantasmagoric world rich with imagination and allegory, Gregory Maguire just might change the reputation of one of the most sinister characters in literature.

Anyone wishing to take part... please say... I hope the first book is acceptable.

After that I propose people nominate and champion their book choice (hopefully that no-one.. not even the proposer has read)... and people can vote for their choice (not their own..lol).. and the one with the most votes is read next... we would do that once the discussion about Wicked is over...

How does that sound folks? :)

Could anyone interested in joining our group please let us know?

Razzy here! :D

I hope we get lots of interested folks in on this. I love reading and I agreed with DB that it would be a great idea to pull in people from Lit to form a reading group. I hope that some of you are interested in it! I think it will be a lot of fun. :)

I have just recently obtained a copy of the book Wicked. I would like to thank Foof for her recommendation to DB on it. I've read the first few chapters, and I think she's made a great choice indeed! :D

Just wanted to mention.. if anyone doesn't want to purchase the books from a regular bookstore, try half-price bookstores, used bookstores, or even Amazon.com.. :) Or the local libraries might have them too.. :)

when would we start?
Hi dgo, and welcome! :D

Well, I would say if you want to start reading the book now, go ahead. We'll probably give the thread at least a week or two to gather up interest.. Then see how everyone is progressing with the reading. :)

My library doesn't have the book available, so I'll have to wait until I get it from my online book club.

Your library can get the book for you if you ask.

Go to the reference desk and ask them if they participate in any interlibrary loan programs, and if they do, ask them to loan the book for you.

A library that participates in the program and does have the book will send their copy to your library for you to use. When you are finished return it to your local library and they will send it back to the library it was borrowed from.

Just a suggestion. Some libraries do participate, some do not, but may be worth a shot if you don't want to purchase the book.

Kendra!! :rose:

Thank you for the information! I had forgotten all about libraries being able to do that. Hopefully DGO saw this, and will check into it.

Are you going to join us in the reading group Kendra? :)

I did, the book is on loan. I'm on a wait list, but that could take forever.

I've already read Wicked (hope to see the play sometime this year), and participated in a book discussion group on it...

I may wait and see what is up next.

But thank you for the invitation.

I'll join in the group, but because of my work schedule this week, I won't be able to get a copy of this book until next Saturday. I've heard good things about it, though.

I've also thought about going to see the play later this year. Where would you be going to see it, Kendra?

Are any more people interested in the group?

The book is really really cheap on Amazon, and well worth it, i assure you.

I hope.....

No worries stg. You've got at least a week or two before you'd need the book. Giving the thread some time to get out there among everyone. :)
