ratings

I think that depends on what you're after.

Ofcourse one gets flattered if everyone votes 5 for your story, but then again, WHO votes 5? Intelligent people with a sense for quality stories, or a bunch of low-lives that are only interested in jerking off to a sleazy description of fuck?

If you want quality, you forget about the number you get when people vote, and you aim for the E's, as in Editor's Choice. That means you have written a great story with erotica in it.

If you want popularity, you write as much filthy clichées as you can possibly think of, throw in a little degradation and some dirty words too, and you'll get an H as in Hot after your story title, indicating that you have pleased the dimwit masses.

I agree with Svenskaflika that the relative value depends upon why you write. An "E" from Laurel is an indication that your story appealed to her. After reading some of the "E" stories, I think she's an excellent judge.

The "H" is a consequence of more than 10 votes that average 4.5 or higher. If one does the math, this special rating makes sense.

A rating of 4.5 out of 5 means 90% of your voters got caught up in your story and thought it was good. If the rating is 4.0, 80% liked the story. Ratings higher than 4.5 probably mean you hit a nerve for many readers, or that your story was particularly well done. Lower ratings mean whatever you want. It could be the story was misplaced in the categories, that the content was not what readers expect, or simply that it didn't grab anybody.

To put these ratings in the context of mass appeal, there is a lot of money spent in advertising to attract a relatively low percentage of viewers. Most elected officials make it to office on slightly more than a simple majority. According to the last data I read, the response to newspaper ads is about 1%.

What is a good rating for a story?

A score of 3.01 is "above average" in theory. I'm very happy with any score above 4.00 -- The nominal "good" rating -- but I'll settle for being "above average."

It's a little known thing, but Manu can also award the coveted E to a story, although there is no way to tell whether Laurel or Manu made the choice.

Like the ladies above said, it depends on what you want from a story. My lowest rated story (3.67 last I looked) got a "very good" rating for what the story is. The story aroused a passionate response and a good deal of discussion and that's better than high scores any day.
