I realize this is not an issue for those with headier levels of readership, but for little old me.

  1. Happy that a sweep has dropped troll ratings and boosted my overall score for a story
  2. Sad that the same story now has a measly 9 votes and no more red H
First world problems, I know.

Frustrating, isn't it? But every 1-star removed has a much bigger impact on the final score than every 5-star vote removed. Things will catch up.

You might want to consider putting a link to your stories in your signature vice your rules list.

I know your feeling, it happens to me with low votes too.

Whatever algorithm the sweeps use, it is not very advanced. It helps a lot in extreme situations, like when bombing happens, but in most regular situations - when you have some occasional 1* or 5*, it performs badly, and it is one more thing adding to the problematic nature of ratings. Once again, best advice is to ignore the ratings and focus more on the actual feedback you get, as scarce as it is.

I know. Just red Hs are so pretty 🤩.

Good point. I use my phone and the signature never shows up. Had forgotten that my rules were in it.

Wow, that rules thread went wacky didn't it? Seemed like good guidelines for most anyone to me... Maybe I'll read your story and get you that 10th vote in a bit!

I still have no idea why. I just rub a subset of Lit users up the wrong way I guess. If you thought the thread was bad, you should have seen some of the PMs I got.

Suggestion: Include a link to your story or to your story submission page in your signature. Sympathetic authors who read your comment might follow the link, read your story, and give you the 5 you want.

Just did. Was suggested above. I use my phone for Lit, so my signature never shows and I don’t really register it.

Just took your advice. Thanks 😊

The General Board is like the island in Lord of the Flies. All the restrictions of civilization fall away and savagery reigns.
I’ve avoided it ever since. Didn’t help that I was in a bad way myself at the time.

Sorry about that. I checked out the thread. I shouldn't be shocked anymore by how awful people can be but the reaction to your post was appalling. I don't understand the satisfaction people get by being vile to others.

Hang in there. There are some on this site who shouldn't be allowed to breed, but there are a fair number of smart, pleasant and charming ones, too. Don't feel hesitant to block particular jerks.

You are welcome here, Emily.

I have a very, very long ignore list.

And thank you.

I like having a lot of votes, but the “hot” distinction is my main sense of achievement. As long as I maintain “hot” status, I’m not too picky.
