If a story doesn't measure up for me to rate it at least a four, I don't give it any rating at all. I will frequently leave a comment, but no rating.
If a story is part of a multi-chapter story, I will wait and rate the final post as my evaluation of the completed work.
Do you have any "rules" where rating stories is concerned?

If I read the entire story, I give it 5 stars.

If I am not enjoying it I quit reading and dont rate.

Some authors say ratings doesnt matter, but I have rarely finished a story that was rated lower than a 4.6.

Low ratings on any story give the reader a preconceived notion. Going with any idea, however false, sets them up for a surprise, or they are so in tune with the rating that they don't appreciate what they read. They often feel compelled to support the rating before they begin to read. I think underserved, bad ratings create a self-fulfilling prophecy. I try not to look at the rating before I read a story. I also never read the comments before I read a story. They can color one's views and influence your enjoyment.

I just thought you were short ;).
Nice one. The site where my pics were hosted has killed all but profile pictures. Sigh! I have such lovely, very short legs, and my boots were killers! Cause I'm short, 4' 10", and I'm sure I'll shrink a lot in the next 30 years.

That's all true, but low ratings also mean that the people who bother to read the story regardless will tend to be the ones whose preferences are the most closely aligned to what the story purports to offer. So if the story delivers on that front, the readers will tend to leave higher ratings after finishing it. And I think that people are more likely to vote if they think that the story is underrated or overrated.

That's not short, that's tiny! Still, killer boots, eh?

But somehow, Millie, I don't think you'll disappear.

Don't worry, when I was nineteen I was six foot tall, but my five foot and a quarter inch tall girlfriend had the measure of me. That quarter inch, mind, was important - she always reminded me of it. In fact, it gets a mention in my most recent story.

They were, well, are. I don't have them on any website right now. I just put my home address in my signature now.

If I'm reading a story I'm not enjoying, I move onto something else. I wouldn't score or leave a comment, though. But If I've read a story that I really enjoyed, I'll make a point of giving it five stars.

So I thought it would show the glyphs here when the internet addy for it in the sigpic
.

At last, I got my legs back (different pic though), and I finally figured out how to size it in here.
