One of my stories dropped a whole star. Granted it only has 3 ratings, I really wish that person would've said why... it's a series chapter and I sacrificed sex scenes for character development. Do you think that's why I got such a bad rating?

I honestly expected this chapter to turn people off, so I'm annoyed with myself for being bummed out.

I suggest not worrying about what they would have said. If it was the lack of sex, would you seriously considering rewriting, anyway?
Remember: 10% of people say they hate chocolate, and even for the ones who like it, they don't like all types equally. If chocolate can't win universal popularity, none of the rest of us can hope to.

We've all felt that disappointment. You're in good company.

With only three votes, you can't make any assumptions. People have different tastes and rating standards they use.

You might have had two votes of 4 from people who liked it, then just something in the story triggered another to rate it a 1. That would drop the rating average from 4 to 3.

And there are plenty of people who just search around for stories to rate them a 1 without even reading them. Something in the title, description, or the tags triggers them, and that's their whole life: to 1-bomb our stories. Without our stories to hate, their lives would be meaningless.

Then I'm glad I can give them something lol

I post this every time:

Some readers have zero understanding or appreciation of the love and work that goes into writing a story. I recall getting a 1 hate vote because I didnā€™t mention it was a chapter story in an authorā€™s note. Can be irksome, but hopefully sweeps minimize the damage.

Ugh
This is why I deleted my stuff here. I guess I'm too thin skinned.
I had people tell me my stuff was too slow so then I wrote a short(for me) story. A basic meet up and then sex, and I got complaints about that too...'it would never happen in the real world'...

Only three ratings? Come back to the story in thirty days. This is like premature ejaculation, it's far too early!

Don't worry about individual ratings and what they might mean, it's the long haul that matters.

One nice comment is worth ten mean ones... heck, if ten people left mean comments on a story, I think I'd actually be okay with it lol

I sometimes think of it like people watching a horror movie, where the victim meets a horrible ending.

The viewers who see that scene and are DISGUSTED by that scene are the same ones who LOVE those horror movies, and they go back for more!

So, my dedicated followers who 1-bomb my stories are, in their own way, loving my stories. Even the ones who leave the shitty comments keep coming back for more.

I don't think I've had anyone come back yet lol... at least not someone brave enough to leave their name.

You should NEVER fully trust someone who doesn't like chocolate.

Reminds me of that scene from "Private Parts".
Researcher: The average radio listener listens for eighteen minutes. The average Howard Stern fan listens for - are you ready for this? - an hour and twenty minutes.
Pig Vomit: How can that be?
Researcher: Answer most commonly given? "I want to see what he'll say next."
Pig Vomit: Okay, fine. But what about the people who hate Stern?
Researcher: Good point. The average Stern hater listens for two and a half hours a day.
Pig Vomit: But... if they hate him, why do they listen?
Researcher: Most common answer? "I want to see what he'll say next."

Have an ongoing series that I'm struggling with for that very reason, but I have a theory and it's about to be proven right or wrong. I'm not going to claim to be some fantastic writer, I enjoy it and overall what I post seems to be well received. I have tended to write what I consider literary porn (stories that are more focused on sex acts and less on character interactions). Even the stories I've written that do have characters that I've tried to develop and stories with arcs, I still have included a lot of sex and detailed descriptions because that's what "sells" here.

The new one is different, I have intentionally delayed the two main characters having sex, just dropping in some random sex involving tangential characters for interest, and attempting to build the relationship and the drama that drives them together. Result, ratings have been well below what my stories usually get. What will be interesting to see is, when the two characters do finally end up together (the scene definitely falls into my definition of literary porn) do the ratings for that chapter increase?

If you like what you're doing and enjoy the story, let it go. I guarantee there are readers out there who are enjoying it as well and hopefully one will drop a comment to let you know.

I actually really enjoy erotica with character development. In my humble opinion, if I want the characters to have sex, then the story is "good".

But I also enjoy "strokers" šŸ˜… They're wonderful in a different way.

Don't even try to think about it, with only 3 ratings. Some people, especially early in the publication, like to downvote stories. You cannot tell anything about your story, or its future prospects for success, from this.

Exactly!

The Loving Wives 1-bombing trolls HATE my MFC, Jan because she's assertive, selfish, and manipulative. And they think her husband is a cuckold married to a slut. They KNOW this just from looking at my author name!

But they want to see what she'll do next and what the husband gets out of it, to again leave a 1-rating and shitty comment! And some of those 1-bombing haters are my followers, getting notifications when I post something new.

When one of my new stories goes public, I can expect several 1's within the first four hours. My latest "The Maneater" went live three days ago, and five hours later had a rating of 1.76 with 20 votes, thanks to several of my most dedicated followers! (It's now up to 2.92 with 117 votes, with mostly positive comments. But the four worst comments were made within the first day, and another was even deleted by the Admins before I had a chance to read it. I must have really touched someone's raw nerve!
