If you have a dog and live along a busy road, KEEP THE DAMN DOG FROM RUNNING LOOSE!

I'm driving down the road and a dog runs right in front of me. I barely had time to go for the brakes, and of course, I hit the dog. It didn't kill the dog. I saw the dog limp back up to it's house.

I turned around and went back to the house to tell the dogs owner what had happened. I explained everything to her, and that I wasn't able to miss the dog. Her response floored me:

She said "It's okay, I know these things happen. You wouldn't believe how many dogs I've had get hit by cars since I've lived on this road."

I went from remorseful to livid in about 2 seconds flat. She has a huge fenced in back yard, but both of her dogs were running loose. I said "Maybe your dogs wouldn't get hit if you'd bother to actually put them behind that fence." I said it in a pretty smartassed tone. She said something along the lines of "you don't need to be upset about it". Then I went off on her. I told her that I didn't need the guilt trip about hitting a dog when she was too damn lazy to even keep the dogs behind the fence. If she didn't care about her dogs any more than that, she needed to get rid of them.

People like that shouldn't even be allowed to have animals. If one gets hit by a car, no big deal. There's always free dogs in the paper. Just go out and get another one to replace the one that got killed. Lather, rinse, repeat. Stupid bitch.

Ooo that rant was definately well deserved. *frowns a little* It's sad how some people just don't treat their pets right.

But here's a rose.. :rose:

Agreed, Wildcard. Nothing makes me more irate than people who seem to think that as long as it doesn't bother them, the poor person miserable over hitting their dog shouldn't have a thing to worry about. And heaven forfend we consider whether the dog has an opinion on the matter.

When I retire with a million million dollars, I intend to become a vigilante dog-catcher, roaming the town and city for strays and teaching their owners to fear the wrath of the horse.

Good for you for doing the right thing; too bad the pet owner is a horrible person.

Our next door neighbors started with three kittens about a month ago. One was hit by a car, another has "disappeared" and the third spends every waking moment at our house. Outside, of course, because we already have cats inside, but the kitty is obviously lonely and has adopted us.

It waits for us at the front door when we leave in the morning. It's waiting on the front porch when we get home at night. When our kids are outside playing it runs over to join in. We thought at first it was hungry and started leaving food for it but it would rather play with our children than eat.

It's been very cold, so we fixed up an old doghouse and placed it where it was accessible for the cat because they don't allow the animal inside their house.

My father-in-law lost his cat not too long ago. We are thinking of grand theft kitty - taking the lonely little cat to Kansas City - to be with a lonely old guy.

It makes me uncomfortable as hell, but if they'd gotten the cat closer to December and hadn't provided shelter then we would probably have already done it.

The animal isn't mistreated, I suppose. Just neglected.

And that makes sense, because these neighbors neglect their children in the same damn way.

People like those mentioned above should not be allowed to own pets. Unfortunately with the laws the way they are, it is hard to have the animals removed from these places. (The same is not true about kids. Many states will remove the children with very little proof of abuse or neglect. Must have something to do with money.)

Sweet, It sounds like the kitten would be much better off if it vanished some night to the home of someone who appreciated it. (I wonder how long it would take the oiginal owners to notice it was missing?)

My dog almost got hit today. :(

He's an indoor dog. I live on a pretty isolated country road. I let him out to "do his business" and didn't even see this pickup coming flying up the road. (Too many hills.) I screamed his name and he just barely missed getting hit. I hate to think that in the middle of the country I'm going to have to take him out on a leash.

Okay how about this. Neighbor moves in with four cats. They are outside cats, but we live on a military base. Two pets is the max allowed. All four cats like my yard better than theirs. These cats are extremely spoiled, but are evil incarnate. Anyway I digress, male cat 1 (dude) gets female cat 1 (MJ) pregnant. She has five kittens. male cat 2 (ozzy) gets female cat 2 (chaos) pregnant. She has four kittens. They get Dude fixed. this is 12 catsin one house all prefering my back yard to their ownand my daughter's sand box to their littler box. So twleve cats. Ozzy then gets MJ pregnant with her second litter. 7 more kittens. AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH I love these neighors, but I am going crazy!!!

Cat

I imagine they won't even notice she's gone. And that is their loss.

She's a delightful little cat, very loving, very attentive. We imagine she'll spend most of her time purring in dad-in-law's lap. :rose:

(Look for news later this week - we're thinking of a Friday night grab and a Saturday delivery - )

I have never understood people that can treat animals that way. Those are the same type of people that kept telling me to "get rid" of my dog when she was young because she had a bad habit of eating couches. The concept that someone can view an animal as disposable and as nothing more than property is something completely alien and infuriating to me.

Just make sure you do two things. These will ensure a much easier transition, not to mention a much safer drive.

1) Take a small blanket/towel she has been sleeping on for a while. The feel and smell of this will comfort her.

2) Make sure to use a cat carrier, at least during the beginning of the trip. It is enclosed yet she can still see out. Also very comforting. (You can also reah in and pet her if she isn't too wigged out.)

Warn Dad-in-Law that she needs to be watched for the first few days as she gets used to the new place. Sudden sharp noises can be very traumatic during this time. It is also best if he keeps her inside at first. If he doesn't she will vanish only to show up at your door at a later time. (Cats have been known to travel incredible distances to return home.) It is only after she gets used to his place that she will settle down and stay there.

Here's hoping things work out for the little kittie.

P.S. The punishment for those who abandon cats should be to be staked out on a main road with their eyes propped open so they can watch cars, trucks, etc. come at them. (If they miss it's better. The punishment is dragged out.)

We live on a country road (was only paved a few years ago), and people are constantly dropping off dogs in the curve right in front of the house. Of course, we end up feeding them all, and at one point had 17 we were taking care of. It's ridiculous the way people treat them, but there's not a whole lot we can do except take them in ourselves, and try to find them a good home as soon as possible.

Luckily, we're on very good terms with our vet (could have something to do with all the money we've spent there over the years - 17 dogs and 5 horses), and he helps us out with finding homes.

That's the hardest thing about encouraging responsible pet ownership. At times one finds oneself asking people to plan ahead five or ten years if they want to adopt a dog, while realizing that they probably didn't do that when they decided to have children.

Both my cats are indoor animals for just this reason. I also detest when someone gets the dog or cat because it's cute when it's young, then just forget about it when it gets older.

Excellent advice -

We have carriers for each of our cats. Anyone who owns kitties knows it's the only way to travel with the little yowling darlings.

She'll be an indoor cat so there won't be any worries about straying. We're hoping for the best for this situation. I feel like a thief and am having difficulty explaining to our kids what we are planning.

But - I just got home from the store and the cat met me in the driveway. She followed me to the front door and kept trying to come inside with me. Of course! It's warm, lots of kitty food, noise, happy kids - she's such a lonely kitty. She needs a new home.

As to uncaring owners? I live in a college town. You would honestly be sickened at the number of college students who buy a pet in August - kitten, puppy, whatever - and then dump it in May along with their cast-off couches and other apartment junk.

The humane society does serious business all summer because of the college undergrads. :(

Unbe-fucking-lievable.

Wildcard, that was a justified rant, if ever I heard one. Good on you for telling her as it is. Stupid bitch, indeed.
