Howdy.

So I guess I wouldn't call myself experienced in any form of BDSM, but I am comfortable as a submissive and always eager to learn more.
So when the Fifty Shades of Grey book came out, I trusted that it wasn't accurate. While I haven't seen the film and I can't comment on it's ... decency; I did decide to read the book and see just what every has been raving about.

...Is it just me? I mean, am I biased?
I feel like it is awfully written and that's before you get to any hint of sexual innuendo. While I adore writing myself I'm not terribly good at it but I feel like even I could re write it with more substance and sense.
I'm not trying to rant, I guess I just want to know if anyone else feels the same way, or if not, that's fine too.

Though for the record I kind of want to re release the book much in the style of Keri Smith. Chapter one- Edit all grammatical errors. Chapter two- How many times does Ana bite her lip?

P much everyone here hates that series like burning. It's not you.

It's 'nillas who are subconsciously conditioned to enjoy having their personal boundaries obliterated and then some in the name of "love" who tend to take to it.

The books stink. The characters are mechanical. The sex is repetitive-- and also coy in the most bizarre way. The most porn-like thing about them is his money.

And the writing is sub-tenth-grade in quality.
The worst thing about publishers these days, is they let all their editors go.

From what i understand, the main reader audience are women who have a very normal life. So I guess it's a BDSM book for people who don't practice BDSM, and more likely it'll stay for them as some kind of fantasy.

Amen, amen!

The more new books I read, the more I want to retreat to my older books, build a fort in my closet and croon lovingly to them. "My precious!" indeed.

I think that the success of the books is due to all of the closeted masochists out there who enjoyed being abused by bad writing.

I think that you and Stella have it exactly right. It obviously turns some kind of crank for a large number of people. And the film-maker and the writer just give the public what it wants.

I would be most interested in hearing if sales of bondage equipment have spiked after the book and film, and whether it will be back to normal levels in a year or two. I suspect that the answer to both questions is "yes."

I read the book and actually started skipping the sex scenes because the "plot" was vaguely more interesting. The opposite of the normal "skip to the good parts".

I suppose the only good thing is maybe it encouraged some people to explore new things?

I have not even attemptd to read it. Before I started exploring BDSM and kink, I was told that it was poorly written. That alone made me shy away from it. I am pretty much a grammar Nazi. I love to read, I am working on my own book... I just can't force myself to buy something when other well read friends tell me it's just trash (which has nothing to do with the sexy content).

Then I began to explore BDSM and I asked a friend from here what his take on it is. And basically, he said it was ridiculous and many people in the life style hated the books with a burning passion.

Furthermore, I read a review that had some excertps, and Christian Gray is just abusive. And I don't mean that in the fun "i love to be controlled" way. If it were a guy living in a trailor park, women would be all kinds of pissed off and demanding a boycott of the trash. But because the main guy is rich and handsom, suddenly he's hot, romantic and a catch? Uh.. no thanks.

Okay... steppign off my soap box now.

The flames of my hatred for this book is unmeasured.
Textbook example of an abusive relationship...

I've seen the film. Mediocre at best. Doesn't delve deep into the lifestyle . Actors had no chemistry. So Im attempting to read the books and have the same statement. As my daughter . the writing is terrible. It makes my eyes cross. But I bought them .and will muddle through.

Anyone here interested in reading my book and telling me if I did a better job representing BDSM? I know that "normal" women like my book, but I've been trying to find someone in scene to vet it for me. I don't want to be disrespectful to kink.

It's female dominant, not male. It's erotic but also very romantic, sweet even. If anyone is willing to give it a sanity check, please PM me.
