Why is this the new GOP talking point? How can anyone hope to get elected by constantly discussing how low and middle class families dont pay enough taxes? I thought the GOP was all about no new taxes, suddenly everywhere I look its, why raise taxes on the rich, those poor people have too much money.

I'm solidly middle-class and my effective tax rate last year was 8%. I could pay more... I don't want to, but I could.

I support a sales tax rather than an income tax. People like me who live life through LLC's get off pretty easy. A sales tax would put an end to that.

...and I can say that because it will never happen.

I admit, its not like I don't have a dog in the fight, I'm middle class, of course I don't want my taxes to go up.

Which is why I find it so confusing that anyone would vote for someone who promises to raise their taxes.

Because we can't even begin to close the annual deficit with spending cuts alone.

Rory, I know this is supposed to be your most obnoxious alt, but maybe try giving it a rest for a while? Just a thought.

Oh, and just to play along for a second, the poor and the middle class are NOT the same. The Republicans represent the middle class, that other large party represents the elite rich liberals and the underclass leeches. Get it? Kay, gotta go now.

I agree we need tax increases and while I would be annoyed at my taxes going up, I could afford it. However raising taxes on the poor, doesnt seem like it would bring in enough revenue to be worth the burden it would put on people and the economy.

I guess it depends on what you consider 'poor'

Here is a quick and dirty on the tax brackets http://www.moneychimp.com/features/tax_brackets.htm

With the average income being about $42,000, the average person is in the 25% bracket, but you can make up to $178,650 and only pay an additional 3% on the money between $85,650 and $178,650

Cuz the GOP wantz to homestead the middleclass. IRL the middleclass are the shopkeepers and lawyers and doctors who work for themselves, are Methodists, and have gay children at 3rd tier state schools. They own all the trailer parks. The middleclass are born to be mild.

Dear Reader

This fool thinks addicts oughta have more crack, too.

Giving more taxes to the pols simply creates more gubmint jobs for their kids and contracts for their inlaws.

I suppose I think more in terms of the poverty scale rather then measuring purely on income alone. While $42,000 a year is a comfortable living for a single person, for a family of 5, it can be a struggle to put gas in the car.

Well, that's a whole different political discussion. As a single guy, why should I have to pay more so people with kids can pay less?

See I don't consider it you paying more, your income is for a single person, where as the guy next to you is really dividing his income by 5.

Same reason you pay school tax even if you don't have kids. It's what our society has agreed to do. Anyone is free to move.

I don't pay school tax. I pay property tax and whatever portion of that the county chooses to use for schools is up the the council, elected by the voters in the county. The property tax covers lots of things other than schools, some I agree with and some I don't.

For example, living here in Berkley-East, the county has decided to put bike paths everywhere - which are nice, but it's a rare day when you see someone actually riding a bike on them. They are pretty expensive when you look at the dollars per bike user.

What gets left outta the numbers are the tax deductions and credits high income people get. If you own a business you can deduct your house and car and all else from your taxes as expenses. Working stiffs cant.

It might be nice to get a menu where we could choose which things we want to fund.

Whether they are used or not, they raise the property value. I wouldn't live somewhere with no bike paths or bike lanes.

I fully support raising taxes on the poor.

It would motivate them to not be poor.

I think we're in agreement. A flat tax with no loopholes makes sense.

Sure, an X% tax on people below the poverty level and for those above is the definition of fairness.

FYI - simple doesn't mean fair. It just means that YOU can't grasp anything more complicated than black and white.
