Perhaps this is an odd question geared toward the older folks that remember them, but how in the world could people go into a porn theater?

I guess I'm just a child of the 80's onward, but with the advent of VHS & DVD's for your viewing of porn, I just could never imagine asking a date to join me at a theater that showed porn. I guess I just grew up in an era where we watched those things at home.

How was it going into one of those places?? I remember passing old movie houses that used to show them when I was a kid. I have never been in one but imagine it to be like any regular small community movie house with the exception of what's being shown on the screen. Curiosity beckons & therefore I'm asking the questions!

-were they sleazy places for tbe most part?
-were there many copules that attended these theaters??
-how could you even contemplate sitting down on one of their chairs?
-were there even concessions out front? (Don't even go there about asking for butter on the popcorn either!)
-what was the clientele like in there?

Are there even any more of these places or have they gone the route of the mastodon? It just seems like such an odd bygone era thing knowing there were places that showed porn movies on the big screen.

And to everyone else...could you muster up the courage to go into one of those places now if they were available in your area?

Oh god your post reminds me of a funny story my mother told me!!!! One day my mother wanted to take me and my brothers and sister to a movie. She unknowingly choose an Adult Movie Theater. We were going to see Pinnochio. When she had told my father where she was taking us he told her to read the movie listing more carefully. Personally, I'm an 80's child too and have never seen the porn theatre heyday. I still think it's odd that people go to peep show booths in the bookstores when they can just rent the tapes and jerk off at home like everyone else, thus avoiding looking like creepy losers.

There were a couple in the town where I attended college, and yes, I went (but only a couple of times for research purposes, honest). There were three types of "porn" films shown - the early black and white, poorly made jerk films, the technically well made porn films that are now considered to be classics, like the work of Russ Meyer, and foreign films with subtitles. The "adult" theater showed mostly jerk stuff; the well made porn and foreign films made it to more legitimate "art" theaters. It is possible that since the campus was in the midwest, the content was tamer than elsewhere, but HBO shows as much or more than anything I ever saw in either type theater.

The adult theater was sleazy in atmosphere, but surprisingly not dirty. The seats were as clean as in most other theaters, and the restrooms were as clean as most service station restrooms. The art theaters were just a standard theater with more risque content, and were as clean. Both types of theater were privately owned then, and I suppose the owners took care of them. It is also important to remember that in the "olden" days, being of a somewhat sexually unique nature did not require one to be sloppy. Even perverts had manners back then.

I never saw couples at the adult theater, but lots of guys took their dates to the art theater.

The adult theater did have a concession stand, but no food. Instead, it sold 8mm black and white "stag films", books and magazines. These theaters were the forerunners of today's adult bookstore. Somehow, I don't think most patrons missed the popcorn.

The clientele?...You have to understand the times. Few, other than college guys, would admit to going to one. One did not stand outside in a line and exchange casual conversation while waiting for the next show. You paid your money and went in. If you arrived in the middle, you just stayed through the end and the beginning of the next showing, and left where you came in. It was rare to see two patrons sitting within ten seats of each other. The theater was never cleared, and the house lights were never turned on, so you never really saw anybody. Most patrons of the adult theater were older men (to us), and lots of drunk college guys. The college guys added the flavor of "Mystery Science Theater" to the feature (Hey look, he's a navel destroyer!). Well..., you had to be there.

Both theaters in my old college town have been shut down for ages. I suppose they were victims of Cable TV and VHS.

They weren't any dirtier than any other theater, the floor wasn't even as sticky as most theaters today.

Mostly older(50s-60s) or those who had no other outlet for sex.


One of them was destroyed in the '94 Northridge quake. The other lost out to "Urban development."
