Radio question

And while all of this may be 'today', it wasn't always so. Many of these used to be staffed in years past. Then there were the lighthouses. And some railroad relay stations.

WHEN your story is set will make the situation more plausible.

Another (ex) radio ham here. I got my VHF licence about 1973 or so. I used to be G8HIZ. I listen to SW a bit now.

That is what i was going to mention- above from Kelliezgirl- smaller agencies will use repeaters on mountain tops and someone has to go do maintenance when the repeater fails- they are unmanned, until someone makes the trip up the mountain. Wonder how your plot will play out!

OP still hasn't said WHEN the story is set, or why it has to be radio as such and not any remote station.

Some radar stations are/were staffed, weather or air defense.

Research outposts can be staffed for extended periods. Somebody mentioned observatories.

Some fire tower stations are staffed during part of the year.
