Racism Is Alive and Well in America

Re: Muslim women wear scarves

shadowsource said:
so pp - do you call Arabs ragheads, towelheads? I can't believe you don't know that it's insulting to call people scarves. It's what they call dehumanizing. I should think you'd be trying to peek around the scarves, not at them.

1. It's called a Chador,and before anyone starts telling me I don't know....I am a Muslim.

2.While some women from Kosovo are Muslims,by and far it is Bosnians that are primarily Muslims.

3.White America can't stand the thought of a white Muslim,to them it's a step down.

4.Christianity has perpetuated the idea that anyone who isn't a Christian is a servant of Satan, knowingly or unknown. Therefore because of a different faith,I am considered less human, and less of an American.

5.Islam has divisions...but it is based on belief and theology not race.

6.Untill Christians face the truth that a good amount of thier faith teaches that difference is evil, and difference of skin color is a lesser human. It will not stop.

Okiedokie....start flaming me now....I'm ready.

pp man before you go congratulating yourself on how "unracist" the UK is let me remind you that not even a month ago they had race riots in the borders. Who do you think you're kidding anyway. I am a bit sick of your elitist attitude towards the US. Read your own history and you will see racism on a new scale.

In the UK you refer to the indian/pakistian races as asians. Your country is just as racist as the US, just covert about it. All countries have racism, it is a global problem. What is important is that people not deny it's existance because then it can grow unchecked.

That's a valid point that cannot be denied.
We have been spoon fed in the UK for many years about how wonderful our multicultural society is. The thing is, we haven't got a multicultural society. We are, all of us, I think waking up to that fact.

and I'm missing all the fun. :)

Lavy, I applaude your pointing out his disgraceful racist remarks.

... And pp asked if we thought "scarves" was a racist shorthand, which it sure is. Nobody screamed at him, til PC came along, and they have their own issues. He was then very funny and seems to have transported Lavy, so maybe we should lynch the motherfucker.

hmmmm, funny I thought I pointed that out on the first page, right after ppman said it. But then I don't count because I'm so new.

So the fuck what? He said she lived in Kentucky and not Kansas. That's a fucking minor detail. Jesus people, you are picking nits.

Lavy, you started this thread wiith an anecdote about how you chose to be offended by some brainless goon using dirty words in a chat room. Now you are scolding people for picking nits.

That's like calling your dog and kicking him when he comes.

You're confused? What do you think I am? :D

To Brits (or non-scarves if you wish) it's a way of identifying someone. Nothing else. How come it's suddenly a form of racial abuse?

Or is it a matter of once again our nations being separated by a common language?

:)

Here is a simple rule of thumb you can use in almost any situation. Whenever you refer to a group of people as an object or an animal, it would be considered racist. Surely you understand why people would object to THAT?

This thread hs grown like crazy...

since I've been away. I only went out to have lunch with some friends (Asian friends I hasten to add) came back and look what's happened.

crystalhunting I am actually talking about scarves the same things the Queen wears when she isn't wearing those terrible hats. The women I'm talking about wear western style clothing the only difference being that it covers all of their bodies. They wear overcoats, long skirts of different colours down to their ankles, boots and...scarves. They talk openly with strangers (men included) and are trying to fit into UK society. The problem the UK has is the Government's policy of not controlling the influx and now we have problems with housing, education and social security benefits where it is perceived that they are taking money out of a pot they didn't contribute to...

Which leads me onto *Lazer*'s point about race riots in the borders. I take it you mean the fighting between Asylum Seekers (not necessarily Moslems) and Scots in Glasgow because, yet again, the local people felt that the newcomers were being handed too much, too soon and too easily by the Government. What you failed to mention is that the two communities have now got their act together and are marching and protesting as one body against the deplorable conditions of all residents in the area. And it is only one small deprived area that grabbed the headlines.

Which brings me round to Lancaster. I'm sorry but I find it quite hard to believe that you get up, go to work or college, shop and come home again without mixing, without rancour, with members of many different races. Every area has it's local Asian shop, the forerunners of which stayed open all hours thus helping to change our ridiculous shopping laws. The Post Office has mailmen of different nationalities, the transport system has workers of all races, the armed services has the Ghurka Regiment, every aspect of life in the UK is staffed or run by members of a different race. Of course we are a multiracial society. With the size of our country and the numbers of people of all races living in it we couldn't be anything else but...

Where I can see the difference between the USA and the UK over this subject is that in the UK (perhaps because of our overcrowding) we tend to discuss, debate and argue the matter openly whereas in the USA there seems to be a certain amount of coyness about broaching the topic at all.

If any of you get the chance to see an old BBC comedy series on TV called "Til Death Us Do Part" I urge you to do so. It broke new ground when it first appeared, and shocked most people, with it's openly racist remarks but quickly became the top rated show of the week, watched and enjoyed by millions of people from all races. It has often been said that the sitcom began the death knoll of racism in this country by bringing the subject out into the open...

Lav

Can this thread become any more childish? The bell rang. Time for recess.

Yep miles...

you're right!

Bye for now. See you around the other threads...

:D

so miles -

If they pay you enough, they can say all they want about minorities and you'll let your pal know you don't agree, but you won't blow that contract, right? Didn't anyone else notice that in his eloquent post?

shadowsource

Are you from Venus or something?

Sure, I tell this 66 year old guy he's a moron because I don't like what he says. Then after 7 years he decides not to do business with us anymore because I insulted him, and we lose about 25% of our annual billing. The next day my boss fires not just me, but the two people working onsite at the client's office. There is no other assignment for them

Boy, I showed that old fart! I'm sure my family and the families of the other two people who lost their jobs would sleep well knowing that I told the old geezer off.

In R/L my boss told me afterwards he wanted to tell the guy to fuck off and die. But he didn't do it for the same reasons.

It's called picking your battles.

FillyVixen

You're barking up the wrong horse, tv.

Part 2: Yeah, right.

No way am I gonna read all the posts....

My reaction to Lavender's original statement is DUH?? What did you expect???
As long as there are differences in people, there will be racism. It is axiomatic. Someone always has to be "better" than someone else. That's the human condition. Get real!!
