We haven't done a thread on favorite quotes in awhile so I thought I'd start one. I found one of my favorite quotes when I was hunting through a stack of old papers looking for something else this morning.

"There is so much good in the worst of us,
And so much bad in the best of us,
That it hardly behooves any of us
To talk about the rest of us."

- probably by Edward Wallis Hoch

Seems to fit the atmosphere on the board lately so I thought I'd start the thread with it. Anyone else?

"Let he who has not sinned throw the first stone."
Jesus

I'm not Christian or any other sect; in fact I don't even believe in God. I just agree with this quote.

Quotable Quotes

Chinese proverb - He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Confucious - The way of the superior man is 3-fold, but I am not equal to it. Virtuous, he is free from anxieties; wise, he is free from perplexities; bold, he is free from fear.

Aaron Levenstein - Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.

That which doesn't kill us still hurts a bit. (Is that it?)

From the Fantastiks -- "Without a hurt the heart is hollow."

I'd heard "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger."

"The good thing about the pain is it lets you know you're still alive."

Re: the proper quote: LOL - yes, I know Shila, I was making a joke. I tend to do that when I'm not calling people a cunt. Sorry for that by the way -- that was too much. See what sleep derivation does to people? Anyway, let's start over since we don't know each other from Adam. Neither one of us died last night, so let's use the supposed strength one receives and do the rapproachment thing. Agreed?

I don't know if it is ....

.. an official quote but I would translate it as:

There are no problems - only challenges!

Deal. Last night I was recovering from a nasty case of the flu, so...

*offers hand* nice ta meetcha!

"Speak softly and carry a big stick, and you will go far."

Teddy Roosevelt

Difficulties strengthen the mind as well as labor does the body. -- Seneca

Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; writing an exact man. -- Bacon

"One small step for Man; one giant step for Mankind."
Neil Armstong (I think)

"There is no right and wrong, only fun and boring!"
Ravnos Path of Paradox

Hecate- Those are the words I live by.

"Enjoy pain while living, for death provides no such pleasure"

"Religion is the opiate of the masses"

"Clean gloves hide dirty hands."

"Sticks and stones, are hard on bones, when aimed with deadly art. Words can sting like anthing, but silence brakes the heart."

"That which does not kill us.. makes us stranger."

"I can please some of the people all of the time or all of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time."

(?)

Shila said:
"One small step for Man; one giant step for Mankind."
Neil Armstong (I think)\

Yep, and he actually misquoted himself. He was supposed to say "That's one small step for a man, and one giant leap for mankind", referring of course to placing his foot on Tranquility Base. Some people think he did say it that way, since there's a crackle of radio just at the place where he'd say "a". Neil doesn't remember how it actually came out.

*laughing* THAT'S funny. Last eve DCL and I were tearing each other's throats out and now we should get a room...

Gods I love these Pisces mood swings! :)

I have no idea how it was supposed to go; wasn't around in '67.

Aristotle said something about excellence being a habit, but I don't remember the whole thing... :(

(See? More mood swings!)

Never said:
"Sticks and stones, are hard on bones, when aimed with deadly art. Words can sting like anything, but silence breaks the heart."

This one I will remember, a very accurate quote.
At least for me.

"The wind shall blow and I shall bend."

"The universe has spared us this moment."

Is this it Shila?
"The happy life is thought to be one of excellence; now an excellent life requires exertion, and does not consist in amusement. If Eudaimonia, or happiness, is activity in accordance with excellence, it is reasonable that it should be in accordance with the highest excellence; and this will be the best thing in us."

Ahhh, I had a typo!
Thank you Chyenne. *time to fix it*

I don't think so... closer to, "Excellence is not then an act, but a habit" but there's more preceding it.

I love famous Misquotes -- things that have been quoted wrong for years, like "Music calms the savage beast", which, of course is "breast". Or "Play it again, Sam" which was actually just "Play it." Some mistakes have become more well known than the originals. I used to know a lot of them. Can't think of any more right now, except these two:

MISQUOTE: "Poor Yorick, I knew him well"
REAL QUOTE: "Poor Yorick, I knew him, Horatio."

MISQUOTE: "Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes."
REAL QUOTE: "Let's get the fuck out of here!"

Wanna play trivia? Anyone remember who said these? (they're fairly easy)

1) Watson, come here, I want you.
2) Ich bin ein Berliner
3) Men don't make passes at girls who wear glasses.
4) December 7th, 1941, a date which will live in infamy.
