In a story where the setting was futuristic and included aliens of a sort, would one classify it as Sci-fi or nonhuman? It seems to equally be both.

Thank you in advance.

Does the story revolve around the science or the aliens?

If science then scifi. If the aliens, then non-human.

Sci-Fi

Sci-fi. It's set in the future and involves aliens which are considered belonging to science fiction. Non-human is for stories occurring on this world (as compared to a fantasy land) and which are not scary (which would be horror), where someone has sex with an angel or fairy or ghost or Santa Claus or something like that.

Putting it another way, sex with fairy in fairyland is Fantasy. Sex with a fairy that turns monstrous is Erotic Horror, and sex with a "fairy" that actually turns out to be not a fairy but a being from another planet is Science Fiction.

Whichever makes you more comfortable. I've written a bunch in sci-fi/fantasy and haven't done anything in nonhuman, but from what I've gleaned over the last couple of years is that the readership has a lot of similarities. Both want erotica, but they also want an internally consistent setting -- like any good sci-fi/fantasy story. They want plot, and they want you to care about writing mechanics and grammar.

If you're comfortable writing in one category, the other should also be fine. I would lean toward sci-fi given what little you've posted here, but if you'd prefer to go with nonhuman you will likely not suffer at all -- unless your aliens are never involved in any of the sexy funtimes.

Is a main character an alien, or having sex with one? If not, Sci-Fi&Fantasy. That's always been my yardstick for deciding between the two categories.

Just because there are non-humans in the story doesn't make it non-human. Those characters need to be central to the story, or else the setting trumps.

I would add that Aliens are essentially a sub-set of Non-humans. I'd put the story in SciFi/Fantasy even if the Aliens are the focus of the story; applying the Specific over the General.

When you post your story, Laurel may change the category if she thinks it's more appropriate to another one. One of my stories I'd listed as Fantasy went into Gay Male instead. I thought it was too romantic for GM but I was grateful later as I realised she knew much more about it than I did and that lots of women readers of course cruise GM in search of yaoi stories.
:)

I'd add my vote for scifi. I think when you start getting into future times and advanced science and things like that, you've jumped into the sci-fi category/genre.

Alright. Seems like it'll be ok if I chose either one. Thanks for the input everyone. Happy reading.
