I work with a lot of people who are not very...tolerant. They have their views and if you disagree then you are wrong or as one guy put it to me once...'one of them' (whatever that was supposed to mean.

Even my own mother, bless her heart has a strong view of gays, lesbians, and even some races. I was raised by this lady and she was a good mother, but her ideals and morals come straight from the bible.

I fear that there will always be intolerant people around causing needless pain and controversy just because something does not 'fit' their views.

Personally, I think that the gay marriage issue should not have ever become an issue. What two (or more) consenting adults do with each other is their business, not the governments, not the church's, and not any single other person's business as long as it does not interfere with others rights.

I've gotten a few of these too, especially in regards to my "I hate men" thread(s) I started a while back.

I think the feedback comes, most likely from an unregestered lurker. Sometimes we forget that there are more people who read our words than those who's names we see appearing on threads.

At least I'd hope to think that anybody who actually posts here would either post our oppinion online, or send a PM. Most of us can't keep our mouths shut even if it's in our best interest anyway, lol. Most here have shown to be more than outspoken, and not afraid of pissing people off, so as I said, sounds like a lurker. (Though I could be wrong)

This is a feedback I recieved. It is not in reference to any story I have written, while my characters do end up together I have not ever tried to inject modern politics into my works by addressing same sex marriaige in even an oblique way as it applies to the current firestorm of debate.

This forum is the only place I have voiced my views and this mail arrived within a hour of my post where I asked what was so wrong with me prefering a woman in my bed with me to a man when I went to sleep at night.

While negative feedbacks ceased to bother me at all a long while back, in light of some of the questions being raised about free speech and hate crimes I wondered if, in the opinion of the Ah gang, this constitutes hate speech?

***On a side note, I believe this was posted by someone who reads the Ah forums in response to my post and all I can say is the monumental cowardice evidenced by sending an annon feedback rather than having the balls to post and possibly get return fire renders your opinion as meaningless as your head is empty. ***

For the rest of the gang I just wondered what y'alls opinion on it was. I considered forwarding it to Laurel, but in light of my belief everone, even toothless redneck morons, have the right to say what they want I didn't see it as wroth her time or mine to find the person in question or to request censure.

Anyhow, I'm a big fan of Ms. Colly's and find her to be a true goddess of the written word, so of course I find it offensive that some moron would have the nerve to defile the goddess with such propiteous prose.

Though when you read a statement like the one sent from 'anon', for those with any sense of humanity and intelligence it tends to stoke the embers of intolerence, firing up our passions as artists, writers, rebels and lovers. Don't know about you, but I like my passions fired up every now and then.

However, the fact that we live in a country where even the simplest form of human has the right to free speech makes me tingle as well as making me feel like I'm freakin Einstien. To think that small minded, inbred Americans like anon can feel free to spew forth with inane comments and generalizations while painting their stomachs with the logo and color of their favorite sports team and brandishing a huge foam finger, makes my eyes well up. Just think what a wonderful land we live in where our freedoms were fought for and held steadfast by the spilling of the blood of countless men and woman, some of whom were (gasp) homosexual, sacrificing their lives so Billy Jo can soapbox his trailer trash mentality and Bobby Sue can stay on welfare.

I'm not certain that insults constitute hate speech. Does there need to be a threat of some kind? I wouldn't give knuckle-draggers like this the satisfaction of knowing you've even noticed them, Colly. There's a site I visit where the manager asked people to report someone who had been interrupting chats and posting threats to everyone, and the FBI got involved. So if you ask Lauren to give this person a scare and she agrees, he might dislike the idea that the FBI is noticing. But the case at the other site was something ongoing that disrupted the use of the site, and pursuing it seemed to be fairly complicated.

You're dealing with a primitive life form that feeds on attention. If it isn't repeated, why waste your time.

Freedom of speech was meant to protect unpopular speech. I think the response to Colleen would be considered free speech. Personally, I wouldn't even give it a second thought. The only thing that bothers me is threats. Someone can say anything they want about me and I really don't care. Let someone threaten me though, and I get pretty fired up.

Some may not like this, but Colleen fell into the same trap that the person that sent the anon feedback did, she immediately jumped into stereotyping the person. The anon lumped all gays and lesbians into one huge pile....stereo typed. Colleen then responded by basically saying that anyone like that must be a toothless redneck.....stereo typed.

I have continually received the same type of feedback which has led me to believe that it is from the same person. This person is one of you, or someone who haunts “AH”.

While it might be that persons real opinion I would say the more likely case is that this person wanted to rattle your chain. There are plenty of people that get a cheap thrill out of bringing people down.

Thanks sher and I agree. I believe whole heartedly in people's freedom to speak. It isn't worth Laurel's time to track him down if she can and it isn't worth wasteing the time of the FBI on someone like this when they are desperatly needed for real crimes. It's his right to hate gays and if he chooses to hate them then he chooses to hate me. Normally I ignore such cretins.

This stung only because I realized it had to be in reference to my Ah post. It did not at the time seem as random as my garden variety hate mail, but as several have pointed out it's just as random. And so I need to pay it exactly as much attention as I do the rest of my hate mail, just enough to hit delete. But thanks to you and abstruse and everyone else for the kind words. I'll start by saying that I am straight, involved, and grew up in the Deep South. To blast the stereotype out of the water, I personally have never had a problem with homosexuality, I support gay marriage, and my family, some more so than others, feel the same way that I do. So not everyone feels the way that this person does.

Now that I am on the soap box, I will state also that whoever we fall in love with enough to marry, should be able to. Love is love, and it should know no boundaries. Everyone deserves respect unless they do something as an individual to have it withdrawn.

The Christian Right is not very Christian, and the homophobes are simply living in the Dark Ages.

Sure, we are all entitled to free speech, and that's fine. We are also all entitled to show the ignorant that utilize that right through example and tolerance, as well as embracing all people as people the error of their ways.

Quite frankly, who you take to bed is no one's business but your own, and it doesn't make you any more or less of a person.
