I am relatively new to writing erotica, I am curious how to write better erotica. If you older authors have anything to offer me, I would greatly appreciate it. If you want to read what erotica I have up, you can find the Morning after on my profile. I do need some advice about how to write better, please and thank you.

Welcome to the AH.
I suggest you also read a lot (particularly the high-scoring ones); get the feel for it.

Writing erotica is the same as writing any other genre: First and foremost, you are writing a story. All of the tricks and tips in the world won't help if you can't tell a story.

Writing, erotica or anything else, is like learning to ride a bicycle. No matter how much anyone tells you how to do it, you will only get better by doing it. The more you create, the better you usually become.

It's a process with a learning curve. I think it's safe to say that each of us that have a couple dozen or more stories here can look back at our first attempts and cringe a little.

I vote for reading extensively in the areas in which you wish to write and pick up both positive and negative pointers and ideas from that reading.

Erotic Writing

I totally agree with the other comments but would add that eroticism means different things to different people. But ultimately, the actual sex is about the same and the results similar regardless. What sets a story apart is the lead up and the afterwards. In short, the foreplay and the post-coital reaction is what make the story interesting to a reader. Find the elements that work for you, tell the story your way, and you are on the right road.

I read rather quickly through your one erotic submission. The input you've had from others here is good, but I'll give you some specific comments.

Story telling in the present tense seems a little awkward. We've had some recent discussion about that on this list. You don't have to use past tense, but probably your readers will be more comfortable with it.

Dialog tags should be fairly simple and make it clear who is speaking. I think you omitted some tags and in other cases used some pretty complex dialog tags. There were several times while reading that I had to stop and decipher the dialog before I read on. You don't normally want your readers to do that -- it interrupts the flow of the story.

A little more punctuation might make the text more readable.

The story was a pretty good little vignette more than it was an actual story. There are five components to a story. Exactly what the components are varies a little depending on your source. Things like character development, conflict, resolution were all downplayed or absent. That's pretty common in material here, so you shouldn't feel like it's a major problem. However, it does make your story quite short and Literotica readers seem to like longer stories.

There is another forum here that is specifically for getting and giving feedback. This question (and my response) would be more appropriate there.

Writers

I want to thank you for the advice you have given me. I do appreciate all the feedback that I have gotten. Also thank you for the welcome.

Your post caught my attention, I can see why it would fit better under feedback and such, also I switch between tenses when I try to write in past tense or so I am told, I do appreciate the feedback you gave me on my story particularly, and I will keep it in mind when I start writing erotica again. Thank you for the other advice as well

Excellent erotica is rare.

The best, in my opinion, is by Lawrence Block, who's famous for noir. But he was a devout student of erotica when he started writing, and he's the only writer whose gay wares impress me. I mean, he covered it all, including gay to straight and vice versa seductions. He did it all. His most impressive erotic writing is where the seductee becomes pathological with the new sex, and the seductor has to leave town. The hunter gets captured by the game.

The best erotica spoils you for LIT fare, because the best art is always the clear expression of what we know but cant articulate well with words. Get this and youll get modern art.
