I'm in the process of cleaning out my basement and came across a small package of screw eyes. I happened to turn over the package and read
WARNING:
Do not use for overhead lifting or support of individuals. MISUSE can result in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH
(The italics are mine.)

I'm curious now. Does Home Depot carry BDSM suspension-safe screw eyes? Or is that a special order item from www.kinksupplies.com? ("Our heavy-duty screw eyes will suspend even the most zaftig sub for your mutual pleasure!")

Its a whole long and complicated equation that would determine the length and and diameter of the screw needed to hold a human being safely or something heavier. I'll just simplify my answer is yes I'm sure Home Depot carries them. You don't need something special from kinksupplies. If you can figure out what size and length of the screw eye you need I'm sure Home Depot probably carries 5 different kinds of it. Its a bit of a misconception that you need to have stuff from a kink supplier in order to be kinky. How do you think people were kinky before kink suppliers existed? lol

Screw eye bolts come with recommended weight ratings, dependant upon size of bolt, depth of screw, weight bearing fixture and number of bolts being used.

But Home Depot carries a selection of bolts that will, if properly fixed, support body weights of most any size.

What you really need to worry about is the pulley system needed to raise a body for full suspension and the type of material you're going to suspend your sub with.

There are reasons other than BDSM that one would need to support an individual from a screw eye. People with disabilities, for example.

Where I work, we use great big screw eyes in the ceilings to suspend therapeutic swings for vestibular stimulus.

I would add don't forget the size and length of the ceiling joists you are screwing into. Lets not forget not all subs are only 90lb and don't wiggle at all. I would not trust a 2 X 4 over a 10' span for anything at all.

What you need is a unknowable carpenter to sister some larger joists using both a good quality glue and screws to any joists used for suspension.

I suspect it would be embarrassing, to say the least, to find your sub face down on the floor after a 4' fall with half the ceiling laying on top of her. Kinda ruins a good play session.

What mike said.

A GF recently asked me to put up a swing for her, into her exposed rafters... Turns out they were hollow luan fake-os. No swing.

The whole "hardware" logistics of bondage scenarios often ends up sounding like one of those things that becomes FAR more complicated when one sets out to do them than one initially anticipates...

Yeah, it's one of the more taxing logistical issues. I have an exposed metal support in our unfinished basement, it's the only reason I haven't invested in a bondage spyder or some kind of rated collapsible system. It's sad that Princess has to go for the abduction aesthetic if she wants to tie people up, I say!

needless to say, you want any kind of hardware to go over a support or through a support, for hanging people from things.

Um, yeah, when I mentioned "weight bearing fixture" I meant this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I really have to learn to explain shit better.

Thanks Mike:kiss:

You are welcome knot_sweet, I hope I was helpful.

I remember a guy from a BDSM group I used to belong to. He installed a Jeep winch in his ceiling and in the end he ended up ripping down all the dry wall and totally rebuilding and reenforcing the whole ceiling.

The point being it is not as easy as screwing a few hooks in and suspending someone from the hook. Were it me I'd try to figure a way to use a steel beam as Netzach has in her basement.

Mike

I personally prefer a custom made suspension device of some sort, it's probably going to be cheaper and easier than reinforcing a whole ceiling, more friendly for if you are renting, and can even be DIY with a little know-how.

That would be a fun Saturday night life skit- shopping for s&m supplies at home depot.

Ummm... you're a little behind the times, Sweet. I've been shopping for S&M supplies at Home Depot (and Lowe's, and tack shops, sporting goods stores, police equipment stores, veterinary offices, etc.) for years and years.

Most people do-but it could be a skit. Ask clerks for obscure screws.... Explain what you use it for....Sorry I think it could be done in a funny way.

Ahh, I see. I thought perhaps you might be one of those folks who wander in here occasionally who think kink toys can only be bought at sex shops and brown-paper-wrapping websites. ;)

Eh, don't worry. When they realize you can't get fuzzy handcuffs or bunny fur floggers there, they'll go back home.

No eye bolts needed, just a solid floor

I would think that a 3/8" eyebolt would be my choice. It needs to be centered on the 2X that it is sunk into. If the sling is supported by two eyebolts, the load on each one is cut in half. 1/4 eyebolts might support that weight but I'd go 3/8 just to be safe.

I work at a farm supply/tack shop ... And I must admit that I size customers up when they come in getting certain ropes, "fixtures" and whatnot ...But then again, I'm into BDSM...

I'm sure they're just wanting to go home and run clothesline, or whatever and are completely oblivious to the nefarious thoughts going through the smiling cashier's mind ...

*trails off, thoughtful*

Trust me on this - if you want to secure 1000 lbs of pissed off horse, you REALLY want that critter secure.

If you can use it to secure a horse or cow, it can hang a human easy. :D
