Question regarding responding to story comments

I recently posted my first story (link incase you're interested :) https://www.literotica.com/s/please-45 ) and got an anonymous critical comment. I decided to respond in a very non confrontational way, breaking down the narrative to the commenter, however once I'd submitted the comment, it now doesn't show up.

All I can see is the anonymous comment, and my response seems to have disappeared.

Any idea why?

There's a delay between submission and posting of comments. That's probably what's going on.

OK thank you. I'm new to the site and had put a decent paragraph out in response so didn't want it getting lost forever. How long do they normally take to show?

Comments get managed in batches. I've seen between 2 - 8 hours (but I'm not in a America, so time zones may impact).

Ok thank you everyone.

I don’t know how valuable responding to negative comments is, but I decided to do so in a fairly objective way of just breaking down the things about the story he (presuming a he from context) had criticised.

I’m not expecting a healthy response and conversation to break out but it would be novel if so.

'Novel' might be one way to look at it. :D

You always have the option of removing comments if they are offensive or even just annoying.

It wasn’t offensive, more along the lines of “I don’t think this would really happen!” So I explained how the narrative worked from my perspective

whatevs

I think comments like that say more about the commenter than they do about the story. Practically every story on Lit is some kind of "pretending".

D/s relationships are not about physical strength. Marty changed his mind. She just nudged him to think differently.

But it will be interesting to see what sort of response you get, if any.

Nice story.

Thanks so much for giving it your time, I’m glad it came across.

I enjoy stories of women using physical prowess as a gateway to a more psychological domination, and essentially uncovering the layer of a character‘s psyche he otherwise would not have let himself access.

My comment response has posted now, I’ll be patient in future.

Now to see if I get a reply haha

Be prepared for that not to happen, though. Although I respond to some of the comments on my stories, I've never had anyone come back with a reply. The comment system isn't set up to facilitate that kind of interaction.

Yeah I presumed I wouldn’t get a response, but seen as I’m not raking in comments it felt easy enough to address the ones I got, especially as I kind of like showing my reasoning.

I saw it

I saw your comment. I responded twice on stories of my own creation when there have been comments.
Generally, the people that comment write their complaints and move on. He or she won't ever see what you wrote.

And isn't it nice, though, to have someone impacted by a story enough that they took the time to type some words? Your creation made him click a button, think about a response, craft that response, and submit that response.

The good and the bad comments mean you owned someone heart and soul for the two minutes it took them to do that.

Hooray!

That’s great! What did you think of my response and story if you read it?

My god I love that description. It did cross my mind that despite claiming not to like it, they appeared to finish the whole thing! If I had to guess motive, I’d suggest a submissive male who’s not yet owning his submissive nature, and didn’t like the feelings of arousal the story stirred. Or maybe that’s just what I want to believe.

The delay happened because over a year ago, there was a problem with bots putting spam in people's comments. So Lit put the delay to filter out such messages.

Yeah I guessed it would fall on deaf ears, but guess I like an excuse to break down my own process

No, it won't fall on deaf ears. It will offer a counter view (yours) for all the those who will read your story in the coming years — then read the comments and maybe leave their own. I've done this on a few occasions — the person who left the comment clearly missed a part of the story. I see it as just clarification of a misinterpretation of the story. Now if five other people say the same thing — then I know it's probably my boo-boo.

You’re entirely right, you must’ve been doing this a while

The easier alternative is to delete the comment. If I thought they didn't really read or understand the story before they commented, I'd have no problem deleting it.

A comment on one of my more popular stories launched into every detail of the first five paragraphs, criticized gun culture in the US, then echoed an earlier comment about the end of the story. The commentator sounded like he was having a Snickers moment. He probably didn't read past the very beginning of the story, and then he copied the earlier comment.

I deleted it. I value readers' comments, but I don't need them all that much. It might take some experience to realize when they're actually telling you something and when they're just spewing.

I rarely respond to comments... I don't get a lot, but still. You might not get a response from an actual account and even less so from an anon account. You'll be notified of a comment on your story, but this isn't Discus, unless they check, they'll never know. and care less than we do about it. But as others said; your reply might parlay some future replies who might feel the same... if they read the comments, since you can comment without doing so.

As it is, I have no problem leaving up the comment I didn’t agree with, but maybe that’s because I’ve only managed to amass a grand total of two comments and must treasure each of them

The thing about writing is, it's a one-way street. Stephen King doesn't get to respond to people who find fault with his writing, or James Patterson or anyone else. Certainly dead authors don't get to. You write it, you put it out there, and people either "get it" or they don't. And in a way, the reader is always right. If they didn't get something, it's because you didn't reach them. Of course you can't reach everybody, but in general, if a point is being missed by a fair percentage of your readers, that's the author's fault for not getting it across. It's like telling a joke: if you have to explain it, you told it wrong. Anyway, that's the way I take negative comments; I try to improve my writing so that those kinds of misimpressions don't happen again. Just MHO, of course.
