if you have submitted, I know you can't edit without causing you to have to resubmit, but can the author just go in and read the submission, I made a mistake and lost where i ended a chapter and want to work on editing next chapter

No, if you open it up, you've pulled it back out of the submission system. The answer is to keep your own good copies of what you've submitted.

Actually, you can just look without causing any problems, once finished just click back, do not click any buttons at the end of the story.

This is true, but as an author I do strongly recommend keeping your own copies of all your work.

There is no penalty for submitting in docx format, so having all your own work on your machine ensures that you can do all that kind of back referencing at any time.

You can only click back and close if you haven't moved to another page. You cannot go back days later and try this. I agree you should write in a word processor and copy and paste it into the submission window. Or upload the file and hope it converts correctly.
