Question for you computer gurus

Okay, looks like it is a memory problem. I used that Everest program and it says I'm using 93% of my memory.

Using the make and model of our computer, shop around for memmory. It is quite reasonable these days. Use pricegrabber.com and also look at zipzoomfly.com. I order a lot of parts from zip.

Everest told the type of memory I have now... 2 sticks of 256 PC2700 DDR SDRAM.

It also suggested I update the bios but I don't know where to find it without spending money on one of those driver programs.

You should be able to find that update directly on the HP-site.

Yeah, those aren't expensive - but I would suggest that you get two sticks of 512 then and maybe try to sell those you have on ebay or something once you exchanged them. It is always better to have two sticks of the same size and brand running. I found two of those you would need for together 20 Euros here, and I think they are even cheaper in the States.

PC 2700 just uses the DDR1 socket for laptops. The socket confusion starts above those.

No, I mean they have DIMM and SODIMM. SODIMM are not as long and thin, so I'm not sure which is the right one. I *think* the SODIMM is right because it mentioned notebooks in the description whereas DIMM said desktop.

Also, while you're at it... XP, right? Hopefully XP Pro.

Start - Run. Type "gpedit.msc", which will bring up the group policy editor for anyone using XP Pro. Navigate in order through... Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> QoS Packet Scheduler -> Limit Reservable Bandwidth.

If you look, it should be 'not enabled', but Microsoft holds back 20% of the computer's bandwidth for their own purposes. Enable this feature and reduce the reserve to 0%. Bam, 20% candwidth speed.

Also, having so many anti-virus items open at once might be another cause for why everything's slow.

As for the Memory, I still haven't learned exactly about the types. If nothing else, carry one of your current memory sticks with you and look for / ask for a perfect match or upgrade. Just remember, they have to hook up absolutely identically, the only real difference should be in the size.

I might add though that 2 GB is of course much nicer than 1 GB...;)
