I was just wondering, because it's obvious that you are a little further to the right then me, what your main idealogical differences are with the Major right wing party in the US? Is it social conservatism? Their poor environmental record? A ridiculous belief that be ignoring teen sex it'll go away? What drives you to the comfy center confines of the Libertarians?

Some forms of libertarian thought are further right than the traditional conservative philosophy. At some times, I see UncleBill subscribing to that form of libertarian philosophy.

I have many questions for UncleBill that I will pose on this thread in a bit, right now I don't have time. However, after recently reading some philosophical works on liberty, justice and equality by libertarian political theorists and liberal theorists, I have some points I would like to clear up in his philosophy.

As much as read my thread starting post I can't seem to find where I said "Question for Lav" :p

Fret not Lav is fully qualified and justified in answering for anyone and everybody on the board, becasue she is a democrat and "knows" what everyone believes feels and knows ;) :p

I wasn't attempting to answer a question.

I'm not giving opinions right now, not for a few weeks.

But I do have a serious question for UncleBill. How does your concept of libertarianism differ from Social Darwinism?

I bet you a millionbilliontrilliongajillion bucks you can't go "for a few weeks" without giving an opinion.

You'd shrivel up and die like an earthworm on hot asphalt.

*smooch*

My greatest difference with the Conservatives is the dichotomies to which they ascribe. I am at odds with their willingness to advertise their position as strict constructionists while continuing to support the socialist welfare system and various other things which are in direct violation of the Constitution which they claim to support wholeheartedly. [The Left, on the other hand makes no such claims about adherence to the Constitution. They find it a useful tool when they can use it to their advantage, but when it would constrain their political goals, it becomes a troublesome obstacle which in most cases they simply ignore when they are allowed to do so.]

The Conservatives campaign on freedom and individual rights but they advocate laws which are the antithesis of these campaign themes.

In some respects they want to be social engineers but not to the intrusive, abusive, oppressive degree as the Left at least so far as has been demonstrated by policy proposals and actual implementation of their platforms.

Depending on the specific point, I'm probably far to the left of you in some cases.

My Libertarian political affiliation is the result of my Objectivist philosophical roots. The Libertarian Party advocates and adheres to the principles of Objectivism much more closely than any other political party. But to understand my positions, you need approach them from the direction of Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy rather than the Libertarian Party positions or libertarian philosophical ideas into which I have not delved to any significant degree.

But from my affiliation with the Libertarian Party, I find their positions remarkably consistent with my philosophical beliefs.

Having found Objectivism many years ago and having settled on it as my chosen philosophy because of its consistency, objectivity and intellectual integrity, I have not seen the need for pursuit of another.

One of the more interesting things I encountered in my pursuit of Objectivism was a point in Ayn Rand's work where she posed the question, "Why does man need a moral code?". I know of no other philosophy that has taken this approach (which is NOT to say there isn't one, merely that I'm not aware of it). She then proceeds to analyze the nature of man and identify the differences in man from other species, what of those qualities define the need for a moral code, and then begins the task of analyzing what the basis and values of that moral code should be and why.

And one of the most interesting things I got from studying Objectivism is that she taught me some interesting things about myself.

A particularly interesting example was from reading her works contained in The Romantic Manifesto. Throughout my life, I had seen various works of art. Some I liked, some I disliked. My likes and dislikes were intuitive and I could not have given you a distinct reason for my responses. In this work, she explained to me the reasons for my responses.
