Question for Ebay users...

Howdy! :D

Okay, here's my question. Ebay sent me a 'request for verification' today. Okay, no big deal, I haven't updated my stuff in a while. I have both a checking account and a credit card listed on there for billing purposes.

So I go to do the verification, and I see something that gives me that feeling that maybe I should NOT send the information. Specifically, they are asking for my general information, my checking information, okay...all that is fine, expected.

But they are also asking for not only my passwords, but my PIN. I mean, I understand asking for the ebay password. That's a given. And maybe even the paypal password for verification, because paypal IS owned by ebay. So, that might be okay too. But to ask for my PIN?

Has anyone else received this email? Has anyone responded to it? And what is the best way to contact the powers that be at ebay? I have tried using their contact form but have gotten no response as of yet...and on the 'verification' email, it says I have to update in 48 hours or my ability to use ebay will be suspended.

I'm confused and worried and generally frustrated with this shit. HELP?

Oh...and thanks. :)

Hi,

Ebay and PayPal wil never ask for Password(s) or PIN's.
They do not need this info.

But, if someone was going to take your cash they would need this info.

PayPal is receiving lots of these complaints lately.

Just forward the email to ebay and PayPal security, then forget about it.

My two cents...
Scott

Never!

Hope you didn't respond to that email! It's spoofed and I've gotten similar ones about Paypal, Microsoft, etc. There's a term for it - like Spam - but I can't think of it. It's basically stealing your info to use your Ebay account or empty your bank account

Bottom line -- NEVER give your accounts, passwords, PINs to anyone -- unless you initiated the conversation (changing a PIN with your bank, etc)

Thank you, Scott. I was hoping that my hunch was correct. I just forwarded it to them, and now we'll see what happens.

I did NOT respond...but I admit, I almost did. Almost.

*shudder*

An empty bank account is something I do NOT need right now.

Well, I finally found some info on ebay's site...

And in the midst of that I got several emails from friends saying 'Did you get this thing from ebay?'

SO...if you got anything at all from ebay about updating information, read this:

Spotting Spoof Emails

Thanks, S. This was a true public service.

I've gotten several of these, supposedly from paypal, ebay and my ISP. I even got one from "Citibank", which is pretty funny since I have never had a Citibank account.

Just a footnote here.
No trustworthy site will ever ask you to send them things like passwords or PINs.
I would reccomend that any time such a request is made, you report said request to the site administrators.
There was one a few years ago, can't recall now what site it was, perhaps Ebay that had the recipient click on a link that would take them to a form to fill out with all sorts of personal info. It looked like an "official" web page, but it was a fraud.

Don't do it! There several scams out there where they ask you for your personal information, even credit card numbers etc with the messages seeming to be from outfits like Ebay, Earthlink, Yahoo Mail....Contact E-bay directly, not by replying to e-mail you got and see if it is a valid request

It's definitely a scam. I kept getting them from "ebay" and finally got one that said my account had been suspended until I answered. I simply went to the actual ebay site and checked my account and of course, it was not suspended.

Since I kept ignoring the "ebay" ones, they decided to see if I would fall for one from "paypal". Nope, I didn't.

Ebay always tells you in their emails that they will never ask for your password.

Thank you for all that advice. I did report it to ebay, and I was impressed with the speed in which I got an email back from them...not just a form email, but a personal one addressing my situation. I was impressed by that. And of course, it WAS a spoof.

The scariest thing was that it really LOOKS real. Even the links at the bottom of the page led me to ebay...it's just the page ITSELF that goes to a spoof site. Clever, no?

I can't believe I almost fell for it.

I'll give them this much though... they do look DAMN authentic!

It almost had me going too.

Makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one who was almost fooled...:rose:

I still have no idea how they did it but it came across looking pretty darn close to a real eBay communique. It even came up in my mailbox looking like legit eBay stuff, but anytime someone asks me for that info.... I pass big time.

Again, I'm just amazed at the complexity of the scam.

Just a friendly bump...

Because apparently there is another significant round of 'spoof' emails wandering through the mailboxes of ebay users.

Just a heads-up to those who use the auction site...

You know the funny thing about that...I've actually gotten a lot of work done today, although you probably don't believe it!

I work at home, so I consider this my socializing! And ya all are just so darn friendly and entertaining that I just can't help myself .
