Hi, I saw in the FAQ about keeping violence toned down in a story and wondered what the parameters are in regards to non-sexual violence? I'm working on my first submission and there might be a shootout somewhere down the line... is this sort of thing allowed and what are the guidelines for keeping it on the right track?

Thanks!

I've found that people can die. I don't think they can do so too graphically, though. Maybe you'll have to test the edge if you think you are on one.

This is another grey area where some stories are rejected while others are accepted. The one real no-no is snuff for sexual pleasure, but in Erotic Horror people often die, sometimes quite dramatically. In the other categories it doesn't often happen, but I have seen (but can't find for the moment) a story where there was a shoot-out and then the girl falls for the man who saved her. There are many stories where people are kidnapped and tortured, usually in BDSM or NonConsent/Reluctance. For pure violence try http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=34473 which has "blood welling from her punctured breast" after she is bitten during a fight.

The violence prohibition is mainly for sexual violence, but the farther removed from a realistic setting you are, the more descriptive you're allowed to be.

I've killed off some characters in pretty horrible ways in Sci-Fi/Fantasy that I'm pretty sure might have triggered a rejection in any other category. Erotic Horror, as mentioned, even lets you push the boundaries of sexual violence, but you'll always be walking on a ledge when you go there.

Unless the shootout is an 80's horror gore fest, it should be within bounds.

I got a temporary gig writing sex stories (was paid for them even!) for a now-defunct website (hey, not my fault!) where they accepted written stories and had actors talk them out, intending to reach sex-starved women using iPods or other mp3 players. I was told quite strictly that violence does not inspire sexual arousal.

Just sharing, for what this is worth. But others here at Lit have had successful stories with violence, so don't be afraid to try.
