Question about selling my body - er, my stories!

I received several letters lately from a site interested in some of my stories and poems. (What a shock - they haven't been stolen for once!)

I'm checking them out, of course, as well as trying to understand the ramifications of giving someone else the rights to my property. (That sounds so terrible when stated in such a way!)

Anyway - I've searched for info and the price range is quite varied. Is anyone aware of the going rate to sell a story to a web site?

I don't know prices, but it probably depends on if you are selling the rights to use the story on their site or the rights to the story period. Grats on the interest and best ofluck :rose:

Congrats on the onterest!!!

I'm not sure of the "going rate" but I do know for shorts to appear on the web most webmasters pay by the word. I have seen anything between 1p and 10p per word offered (about 5c to 25c). It often depends on the length of the story - so much for the first thousand/second thousand and so on.

Do some searches, there is quite a lot of info out there.

There have been threads here

sss, there have been a couple of threads about this but I couldn't find them. I seem to remember dr.M having a thread concerning pay for stories. You might check with him.

Hi SSS, I was gonna make you an offer................... then I realized you were talking about your stories, he, he.

What I did was sold a site the right to post one of mine, all I did was sent the story with "I Lisa the well known and famous and fab author (maybe not word for word like that) give this site permission to post this story on this date yada yada yada."

That way I didn't sell the story cause this guy couldn't afford to buy it, he admitted that upfront. I just sold the right for him to post it, I got less than 100 dollars and a lifetime membership to that site. I looked at the site one time (yawn, yawn) it was o.k. but the best part was the stories. I don't think the site is still up last time I looked.

There are two guys who make these offers who are just wierdos wanting to talk to you -- when they ask for personal info if they are legit they will give you theirs first -- verify it -- like go to the site and look, before you waste your time.

If you want me to PM you with what the weirdos say I will. Oh, if a guy says he wants to buy you fine lingerie in return for you writing him a story I think he is sincere. I just turn down all offers concerning lingerie, but was refreshingly surprised that he didn't want me to send him some.

Hope this helps.

Quiet my darling... It isn't terrible. After all, you've already ceded rights to Lit.

This isn't new, just a bit different. Read the small print to make sure you know just what you're selling - and make up your own mind whether they are offering a fair rate (aided by other sources as already suggested).

Artists always have been prostitutes - doing their thing for cash. The only dicker is about price.

Just remember that you're worth it!

Grats!

Oooooooh, I forgot to say ........ if its a story about gay clowns with concealed weapons you should ask for lots more money.

selling stories....

Hi,

I had the same thing happen to me! A few days ago, someone told me that they liked my audio stories and wondered if I would submit one to a site they had, but it was anonymous and they didn't say what site. I already felt my allegiance was to Lit first, and it being my first one, kinda scared me so I didn't reply. What to say on something like that, huh?

If it's anonymous, I wouldn't trust it, ryd. The Internet has all sorts of nasty folk trolling around.

One of the things I like about Lit is that it's up-front about what it is - its rights and yours. And having hung around here, while there are folk I don't agree with on occasion, the AH at any rate seems almost universally populated with people who care for their peers.

Stay where you feel safe. There are evil people out there who'd rip you off as soon as you give them an opportunity!

But if they front up with an ID and cash, then go for it!

Its not what Edward says, though he is kinda funny.

Sweetsubsarahh and hubby was drinking rum one nite and started a clown thread, I was just drunk on reality and jumped in, everybody on the site musta been blasted that nite cause the clowns got gay and had all kinds of concealed weapons and even machetes and stuff.
I think somebody even threw in a news article about some gay clowns that wanted to march in a parade "armed" so to speak, well I mean with concealed weapons, you know, real concealed weapons.
Maybe you had to be there.

Thats sounds like a guy I talked to who was legit, kinda airhead and sent his first message to me anon. His said he wasn't paying much and when I looked at the site it was hard to navigate and stuff. He said he was going to make a lot of improvements.

I would say definately look at it. The one I sold the right to post one of mine was really nice. I dunno the stuff about selling one you have already posted on Lit. The one I sold I never posted on Lit but some friends have it posted on amatuer type things.

I've seen about 2 cents a word for semi speciality stuff, somewhat higher for real, hard to do speciality stuff.

This is what I've been seeing as well.

Thank you everyone for your congratulations and your advice! I spent last evening researching as many different avenues as possible.

Their offer is a flat rate for each story or poem they want. It works out to be approximately 2 cents a word for the stories (two of my shorter works) but a great deal more for the two poems.

I've checked out the website. It's legit. I'll give everyone more details when all this goes through.

Wish I could tell my mom that I've sold some stories. *sigh*

('Tis a shame she wouldn't be thrilled to learn her daughter is an expert on How-to Anal Sex!) :D

Sarah, go check out the Erotica Readers Association (http://www.erotica-readers.com/ERA/index.htm) and click on the "Calls for Submissions" section. Browsing through there will give you a good idea about the pay ranges for websites, magazines, publications, and non-paying markets.

Really, in my experience, it's very rare for a legit publisher to approach you. Why not instead submit some of your stuff to the listed publishers (I would recommend Pink Flamingo, Olympia Press, Chimera, Black Lace, or Bethany's Woodshed) and see what the response is before accepting any unsolicited offers .....
