Hello all. I have a question. My wife and I have been discusing getting her nipples peirced but there is one question that keeps coming up. After they are pierced if we decide to have kids can a woman breast feed after she had had her nipples pierced while younger? Or does this make breast feeding imposable?

Thanks for the help.

Piercing and Breastfeeding...

Oblong, this is an intelligent thing to consider! It is actually the reason I put off getting mine done; if I had children, breastfeeding was VERY important to me, and at first I could get no answers one way or another.

In my studies as a breastfeeding educator, I have looked and looked for information regarding this. There is NO purported link between nipple piercings and decreased ability to breastfeed. The evacuation route is rather like a spongy area versus just a single 'chute' for the breastmilk. So it's a bit like putting a nail through a sponge, the water still flows through the other holes just fine :)

One important note though; make sure the piercings are taken out at ANY time breastfeeding is occurring! Although it seems like it may be impossible, there is potential that the suckling could detach parts that the infant could swallow. This is the ONLY issue I have been able to find any information/research on.

Good luck and (if decided) Happy Piercing! :)

I would like to add one thing to what Mae said. When I did some research before getting pierced I found the same things as she did, but I also found this.

If your wife chooses to get pierced in the nipples, the piercings has to be totally healed before she gets pregnant. The changes in the breast during pregnancy are too much strain on a new piercing, and the ring will have to be removed.

You should also note that it could take a long time before the piercing is thoroughly healed. I have heard people say that it can take up to at year.

An additional thought...

If a woman did keep her piercing during breastfeeding... could the metal (assuming her nipple ring/stud/barbell is metal) effect the breast milk?

Or is it a given that you would have to take it out and let it heal well before you started breast-feeding?
