Once again, ignorance isn't bliss.

I shouldn't laugh, but I can't help it.

Especially amusing is Ms. Unruh's reaction. Sigh, why must people force their neuroses on others?

Have not read through article RG, but forcing neuroses on others is a common human trait :D - lol

I like the Dilbet cartoon where Dilbert tries to construct a net filter. Dogbert's comment (roughly): "So you're pitting your wit and knowledge against the combined hormones of millions of teenagers?"

Polticians ain't helping matters any, either. I've only recently learned that somewhere in the last 10 years our esteemed state legislature has not only mandated "abstinence only" sex ed (what the hell is the EDUCATION part of that? Grrrr.), but that the only STDs schools are allowed to teach children about are HIV & AIDS. I found myself torn in the strange gray area between flabbergasted and furious and have yet to find my way out.

LOL

(saw article now, thank god I have grown up sort of) Apropos, Shanglan. LOL.

OK, stupid question time -

Among virgins, boys who have pledged abstinence were four times more likely to have had anal sex, according to the study.

Does that sentence make sense to anyone? I'm utterly confuzzled by the apparently really strict definition of virginity here.

I considered myself a Virgin until I had vaginal intercourse, even though I had already had oral and anal before that.. amazing the rationalizations we subject ourselves to.. :p

Human beings are the rationalising animal.

Wait! Wait! The rational animal.

At least that's what we tell ourselves.

That's what it feels like for me, too, even now. I accept that to others, oral and anal sex are "losing your virginity." I don't mind if you think that way. I don't.

For a parody of that view, I offer: http://technicalvirgin.com/

As did I.

I suppose it's the sexist in me sneaking out, though I do try to keep that little bitch locked up. ;) First, the assumption that the boys in question were on the giving end and second, the feeling that it's just plain different for the male of the species. It is far easier for me to agree with a female rationalizing that she is still a virgin after having anal sex than it is a male. Not necessarily right, I know, but there it is.

Where were you people when I was sixteen? Let's have an assfuck so I can stay cherry? I would have killed to know you. Socially, I mean, of course.

I love the creative date ideas. :D

It never ceases to amaze me what things we decide we need technical definitions for. People focus so strongly on rules that we forget the values behind them are what was important in the first place.

I have an ex who was married, and was also seeing this other guy behind her husband's back. She insisted that she hadn't had sex with him, or even blown him, until she and her husband were separated, and therefore, hadn't committed adultery, or even cheated by non-religious standards. I looked at her, and shook my head, and asked her how it made a difference whether or not she slept with the guy when her relationship with him was a violation of that which she had with her husband, and she had no real response.

"Human beings are the rationalising animal." Well said, rgraham, but I like the way a friend of my uncle's put it once.

"People is stupid!"

On Abstinence until marriage

Sigh, there are people who can do it and there are those who can't and it's always pathetic to see those who can't try to do. The ones who can who are doing it for a deep purpose of personal meaning or a promise they have a truly strong impetus to follow, just don't fuck. In any form until when they decide to. And they do exist. People who can control their base hormones. Who resist it not because it's not offered, but because they don't truly need it. But they're also the same people who will be "pushed off the path of righteousness" by a technical demonstration. In fact, if ignorance was required to make their choice work, then well, it wasn't a fucking true choice that has the water to withstand the biological urge.

The problem I see it is that there's all these kids who want to play at the big table and their parents are forcing them along with urges of faith and blahdeblahblah. These kids can't play the table. Don't have the willpower, the drving urge (or rather the lack thereof) to actually be abstinate and thus rely increasingly on "justifications" such as if it's not vaginal it's not real sex (and that's a common justification for the kiddies to remain pure (heck isn't it a porn cliche that you fuck the nun up the ass so she's still a virgin for God?)). It's not really all that difficult to wait as many of these people could before they were in a relationship (relying on masturbation or god forbid life), but well it all comes down to whether they have the desire or true want to go through with it once they know what it is.

Ignorance should not be the fuel for abstinence. It should be its enemy. Once one has understood exactly what he/she is abstaining from and still chooses that path, then it gains meaning. It has the strength of conviction and becomes less of an empty moral high ground to crawl up with a cock in the ass.

Why do people always want to control other people's sexual practices? It's been happening since time immemorial with disastrous consequences:

1. The Bible's intolerance towards homosexuals - has led to widespread hate, discrimination and downright persecution of good people.

2. Roman Catholicism's insistance that stopping the reproductive element of sex is wrong - has brought us overpopulation, war and famine in African countries, along with an Aids epidemic that's spiralling out of control.

I can't think of any more, because it's far too early. But this kind of ignorance makes me really cross.

I'm all for the Dutch system, where instead of sweeping things under the carpet and pretending they don't happen, they take off the rose-tinted spectacles and see things for how they really are. How many other countries have a trade union for prostitutes that gives them regular healthchecks and fights to ensure that they have a safe place to take their customers?

Color me confiuzzled, but if teenagers' reponse to absinence-only education is to fuck each other in the ass, I'd say the educators needs to get some kind of education themselves. Are people really that stupid? Oh wait, sorry I asked.

Actually people aren't stupid. The problem, as Heinlein put it is they 'are ignorant and prejudiced by their environment."

But stupid is a workable description.

In many school districts, Liar, they're not allowed to teach anything OTHER than abstinence which means all they can do is say, "Don't do it" but they can't even tell 'em what "it" is. Of course they're fucking each other in the ass! ;)

I used to think sex was a pain in the arse, then I started going with girls

Comment on the thread... Thank God I live in the UK.
