I have a good friend who is teaching/counseling a small class dealing with issues that college students face when dealing with the confusing nature of their sexuality. These kids are in a very conservative part of the country at a very conservative religious school. Many of them question their sexuality and have guilty feelings due to their religious upbringing on the topic.
What I fear the most is that the counseling will lead them to deny their true sexuality and ultimately hurt them. I have provided a list of many books regarding the myths about homosexuality in Christianity as well as more liberal interpretations of Christianity that embrace to varying extents those who do not meet the dominant sexual classification in our society.
If any of you have any advice for me as I'm talking to the teacher/counselor about this, or if you have good books or literature to suggest, please let me know.
The plight of gay youth has been something that has really been high on my concerns for quite a few years now. I remember reading three years ago that teenagers who are struggling with sexual preference and sexual orientation issues are twice as likely to commit suicide or to runaway than those who identify with heterosexual leanings. Reading these stories and understanding the way gay youth are treated in our society has really made this reach my heart. I would truly like to do whatever I can to help my friend as she is counseling these youth to ensure that they are getting the best advice out there to make them feel comfortable with their sexuality to allow them to have a healthy and happy life.
