QUEEN ANNE?S REVENGE
Blackbeard, like many pirates, began his activities as a privateer for the British during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13); his first reported act as a pirate was in late 1716. The following year he converted a captured French merchantman into a 40-gun warship, "Queen Anne's Revenge." Apart from the luxuriant black beard, which earned him his nickname, the most prominent aspect of the Blackbeard legend is his great buried treasure, which has never been found.
In 1919, the U.S. Congress ratified the 18th amendment approving prohibition and thus giving birth to the speakeasies?hip flasks of hooch, jazz, speakeasies, bobbed hair, "the lost generation." The Twenties are endlessly fascinating. It was the first truly modern decade and, for better or worse, it created the model for society that the entire world follows today. It was an era of towering intellect in the arts and sciences ? perhaps like none before or since.
Welcome to Queen Anne?s Revenge. Everyone knows where to find her? she is the most widely known secret along the coast. Just drive towards the Ocean and there she sits back off the road, wearing the disguise of a quiet Bed and Breakfast. A long winding drive leads you to the front door. She is a large house, with a windowed turret. Surrounded by towering trees, she has an air about her that says comfortable elegance. There is a touch of magic about her. The staff, headed by Phillip, is ready to see to your every need; breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a cup of coffee over a morning paper is yours simply for the asking. The furniture should be at odds with the décor, but it?s not. Whether it?s the wicker chairs on the back porch or the sofa in front of the fireplace, it?s all oversized and made for comfort? nothing delicate about it, but it fits her like a glove. It?s a place that invites you to get comfortable and to forget your troubles for a while. Standing on the back porch, you see the beauty of the secluded cove? in a bygone era it would have been the perfect hiding place for a pirate ship. There are legends of the Gold and the curses.
At night, she puts on her party dress?. cars line the drive, candlelight flickers as the gaily-colored Chinese lanterns sway in the ever-present ocean breeze. The leaves of the trees part and the twinkling lights of the private bungalows can be seen. Men and women from every walk of life come to enjoy her hospitality, and at the front door they are cordially greeted by Aaron. He is nothing less than a giant with gentle eyes that do nothing to hide his sharp intelligence. It is his job to see that no one passes through this door without the password. He can recognize it in any language?? friendship.? From the main entry hall, doors slide open and the many small rooms are opened up so that people may move freely from room to room. To the right is a banistered stairway leading to the uppermost private quest rooms; to the left is a door leading down. The music that can be heard is pure, and the deep laughter of the men and the tinkling laughter of the women is friendly and welcoming. It is a place of warmth, a place like no other? it is the speakeasy of the Queen Anne?s Revenge.
The Rules of QAR are few and simple:
1. Have fun.
2. Respect others. This may be cyberspace, but remember there are real people out there with real feelings.
3. Communicate? not only in words but also in the actions of your character. Try to avoid one-line posts. Show each other what you are seeing, doing, and feeling.
4. No graphic sex. These are the public rooms? a sister thread is available for more intimate encounters.
5. An off-colored remark every now and then is funny, but a steady stream is boring and offensive. Doubling meanings are so much better.
6. If you are not available to talk, post yourself out.
7. If you use the sister threads, remember you can be in only one place at a time
