QUARRY by Max Allan Collins
5 Stars Noir
Quarry is a young assassin who operates around Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
It was Collins 3rd novel. Its fulla flaws but better than most well-written hard crime novels. Quarry's victims seem to be sweet harmless people but aren't. One is a priest, one is a disabled janitor, one is a cabbie, etc.
Collins says he cranked out 3 novels while enrolled in a creative writing course, two of the novels sold "Quarry" he set aside for a while. He confesses he stole the Quarry character from Donald Westlake's PARKER. His writing instructors weren't impressed with his talent but came around after the two books sold.
The book is a keeper, and a good tutorial for noir writing...heartless murder and married whores. But I winced at how Quarry put a woman through an inquisition after her brother died. It was implausible and incongruent. Its a good read, tho.
