That's why I stick to Guinness and cider - although mind you, a good scrumpy can sometimes leave one feeling as if one's stomach has been sanded.

Guinness makes me sad.

Years ago I was on one of Her Majesty's ships that was en route from a courtesy visit to Eire back to Liverpool.

The minelaying racks had been put to good use. They were loaded with barrels of genuine Irish Guinness. We lost the lot in a storm force 10.

I still regret those barrels.
