I was hoping someone could clarify the function of this board. Is this a place where for users to help each other, or are there eventually answers from someone running the site?

And, if this is not the place to bring something to the attention of someone running the site, does anyone know where to report things that need more than an explanation from a helpful user?

Manu, Lit's tech guy, occasionally drops by with a post or two, but the forum is mostly fellow account holders sharing what they know. The truly desperate can try a PM to Laurel or Manu, with no guarantee of an answer. You might get quicker advice asking here - if someone knows the answer and sees your post, you're ahead of the game.

Thanks. I did post something earlier, and didn't get a response, but I'm not sure it's something other users can help with. I think it's just a bug. When I view stories in the beta story page format (which is a big improvement), I can't vote for the stories. The stars light up when I hover over them, but I can't click them to make them stay selected. No vote gets recorded. The browser I'm using is Chrome.

When I have an issue with a web site or page, the first thing I do is try another browser. Almost always, the issue either changes or goes away so I can do the task. The commonly used Chrome supplied by a search engine is basically spyware. I have two other Chromium variants, Opera and Vivaldi and I can never get either one of them to work very well. They say Brave is supposed to be better, but I haven't tried it yet. My primary browser is SeaMonkey, but I have to fall back to IE11 for some sites.

Thank you for the report.

I have been testing it on Chrome just now and I can't reproduce the issue yet. Can you let me know if you are using a modern version of the browser? Also, do you have the page zoomed (using browser tools or plugins) or anything special like that? Since you mention seeing the stars change color, I assume you are on a desktop browser, not using a touch screen?

Thank you for any additional information you can share. :D

I am running Chrome Version 81.0.4044.138 (Official Build) (64-bit) on an HP laptop. It has a touch screen, but I'm not using it in touch screen mode. I very recently had to replace the my laptop, and the problem occurred on my previous one, too, which was also an HP laptop with a touch screen mode.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the page being zoomed through browser tools or plugins. I'm not running any plugins that should affect it, but I don't know what browser tools might come into play. I haven't intentionally set anything that seems relevant. The zoom that I can see when I look at the options is at 100 percent. No accessibility options have been activated. Font size is set to medium.

Please let me know if there's anything else you want me to check.

This problem occurs every time for me, without exception.

Thank you. I'm using the same version of Chrome, so it's strange. I'm sure there is something that I'm missing.

Would it be possible for you to hit the F-12 key to launch the Chrome Developer Console, then go to the "Console" tab and see if there are any error messages that appear there when you load the page and when you try to vote?

It should look something like this (but with actual errors if there are any in the Console):
https://developers.google.com/web/tools/chrome-devtools/console/images/overviewlogging.png

Thank you again for your help.

Latest build IPadOS Safari browser can vote, but the stars don't light up. I have to go visit the site on a different device to see that I voted on a given story.

There is a message under the Console tab:

[Intervention] An <img> element was lazyloaded with loading=lazy, but had no dimensions specified. Specifying dimensions improves performance. See https://crbug.com/954323
DevTools failed to load SourceMap: Could not load content for chrome-extension://hdokiejnpimakedhajhdlcegeplioahd/sourcemaps/onloadwff.js.map: HTTP error: status code 404, net::ERR_UNKNOWN_URL_SCHEME

That message is the same before and after I attempt voting.

Also, see chifan7536's post under the beta sticky:

Dear Folks, I apologize if this situation has already been addressed. I am using a year old Acer Chromebook and I am signed in using the Beta option. When I try to click on a Star rating for a story the Star does Not " take" or stay on. Is there a Fix for this? Thanks, Harold.

Thank you for checking that. The error you are seeing about a map seems to be related to several different possible plugins. It looks like it might be harmless and unrelated to the voting issue. I tested the following plugins and the voting still worked during all of my tests:

AdBlock
Last Pass
Microsoft Feedback

Do you have any other plugins installed that might be blocking the voting?

Also, would it be possible for you to look at the "Network" tab in the Developer Tools and see if it shows anything if you try to click the stars multiple times in a row? Each time you click on a rating star, you should see the "rate" file reload in the Network tab. It should show a status 200 in one of the rows next to the "rate" filename.

Thank you again for all of your help.

I don't have any plugins running that I'm aware of, but I can't find any place where Chrome allows me to manage plugins. I did check the extensions. The only extension I'm running is LastPass. Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Docs Offline, and the application launcher for Google Drive are all installed, but are turned off. If there's a separate place to look at plugins, I'll check it if you'll tell me how to find it.

Nothing happens at all under the Network tab. It's blank when I open it, except for the timeline headers at the top (20 mi, 40 mi, etc.) When I click the stars, nothing changes, no matter how many times I click.

Thank you for the further information. I have tested with Chrome and Last Pass and no matter what I do, it allows me to vote.

This is very difficult for me to track down so far. I can see that most people using the BETA are able to vote, but we've had a few reports like yours, so something is going on.

Does anyone else reading this have the same problem, and if so, can you let me know if you are on a touch screen or not and what browser you are using?

Thank you again. :D

chifan7536 posted about the same problem. (https://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=1523647 and https://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=1514390&page=8)

He said he's using an Acer Chromebook.

I tried using Edge as the browser, and had the same problem. So, whatever it is, it's not the browser. I don't know enough about this to have any idea what the screen has to do with it. I don't actually use it as a touch screen, but the feature is always active. Another thing that's always active is that if I turn the laptop sideways, it reorients the screen. I haven't been reorienting the screen when this problem occurred, but I thought I should mention it just in case. I'm using the default display resolution (1366 x 768).

By the way, I noticed that in the Beta version, you can't enter a subject line like you can in the current version. Am I missing it, or is it not going to be an option in the new version?

Thanks.

It looks like there are Acer Chromebooks with a touchscreen, so I'm wondering if it might somehow be related to the touchscreen since we can't reproduce the error here. But, the voting works for us on smaller touch screen devices, so it is confusing.

As far as the comment title, in the new version, you will be able to bold the first line of the comment and it will work just like a title. That feature is still in the works. We are trying to simplify it to make it as easy as possible for users to make comments. Making titles optional removes one form field from the interface.

Thank you again for your help with the voting issue. :D

After a lot of searching, and buying a cheap Chromebook for testing, we believe this issue should be resolved.

Chromebook users, and users with touchscreens and mice, please let me know if you can vote now using the BETA story page.

Sorry it took so long to find and fix.

Thank you for all of the help with tracking this bug down! :D
