So my girlfriend and I are interested in starting to introduce some toys. We're looking to get a dildo, but are wondering a few things.

- How is rubber compared to the other "life-like" materials?
- How do the suction cups perform? Hold tight or do they come free often?
- Are different materials stiffer than others?

I don't like the "jelly" toys. First of all, they sting and burn my delicate parts. Yeah, you can put a condom on them, but if I have to put a condom on my dildo just to make it comfortable shouldn't I get a better dildo???? Plus they attract every little fleck of lint on the bed. Yuck.

Huh? Do you mean "life-like" or something else?
Most materials that advertise being lifelike, like Cyberskin, are compounds of latex, silicone and lots of chemicals. I wouldn't advise these because the chemicals can cause health problems and irritation, they're not easy to clean well and aren't terribly durable.

If you can afford it, invest in 100% silicone (be sure it's 100%, not just labelled 'silicone' because it only has to have 10% silicone to be labelled such), glass/pyrex or stainless steel instead of junky mixes like jelly and cyberskin. Acrylic and vinyl can be okay, too. Ideally, you want something that can be sterilized in the dishwasher, via boiling, or a bleach solution. eBay's Mature Audiences section, under Everything Else, often has outstanding prices on high quality toys.
