Publishing etc...

Then you have to consumers (readers) who have to find them. They leave the marketing to the writers because they don't really have the defined marketplace that the paper publishers do (book stores, grocery stores, etc). I keep hearing that e-publishing is the wave of the future, but that only seems to come from the e-publishers.

E-Books simply aren't convenient. Yet. The advantage of the paper book is that you can stuff it in your pocket and read it anywhere...no power required...

Will they become more convenient? I think so...in time...

I believe they will, but with one drawback - young writers entrance into the e-book market will be curtailed as published, mainstream authors flood in to take advantage.

And there are aspects of e-publishing that I had NO idea existed. All the promotion, etc. You wouldn't believe the amount of of time an author spends on promotion (rather than actually writing)... A lot of it is marketing, name recognition, etc.

Hell, I don't even try to promote my work on Lit...I just put it out there, and if it gets read, that's fine, and if it doesn't, that's fine too....

I saw something a while back...an E-Book reader...the user downloads a book into it, and then can access it whenever, and wherever they want.

I think when this device or something similar is available, it will actually make it easier for unknown writers to market their own material without a publisher, or epublisher.

Most ePublishers require submission of a marketing plan along with the book. They wanna know you're invested in your work.

Re ISBNs: They're the industry barcode, used to track sales/inventory. Without one, your sales are limited to just your publishing house. With one, third party distributors (FictionWise, etc.) can sell your work. Increases both sales & exposure.

Marketing plan? LOL...The train just the station without me...

Thanks for the info on the ISBN numbers...It was something I had no idea about...

The "N" stands for NUMBER ... so "ISBN numbers" is redundant redundant. ;)

"Marketing plan" is used rather informally, though.

Yep. All I did was say pretty much that I'd promote the hell out of my work.

And I have. Wondering if I'm doing it in the right places though.

In electrical engineering, redundant redundancy is seen as a good thing.... :D

Seriously though, thanks.... :)

Marketing plan...hell, I usually don't even have a plot... :D

I know how you do your plots. A fucked B, B fucked C and then C developed feelings for A and then they all found out they were, in fact, siblings separated at birth.

413? Wow!

Anyone backing Ireland yet? :D
I don't know. Ireland in the super eight is just... weird. I wanted Pak. :( India-Pak matches are just out of this world. But not to be. sigh.

So is Pak out of the running now?

And the Aussie captain's having to eat his illadvised words about "minnows of the competition".

I wouldn't want to be a Pak player right now - the supporters take their cricket very seriously

Reviews and interviews are good publicity. Spending 30 minutes a day surfing industry & reader blogs ... and commenting when so moved ... does more for name recognition than anything I've yet encountered.

Like Mrs. Giggles?

So do you have a blog list, Imp??

I know. India and Pak are crazy like that. An Indian player's house was damaged after the Bangladesh loss. sigh.

So, I take it that you are a cricket fan?

Lots of people read Mrs. Giggles. Not sure how many heed her reviews, though.

It is. But the future is somewhat in the future now.

I believe it's going to depend on places like Fictionwise or Amazon. Third party sites that people can go to to shop for e-books.

It's also going to depend on decent e-readers, devices small enough and light enough to go anywhere, so you can read on a plane, in the tub etc.

.

Good points. E-Books took a big hit when Amazon dropped them from their main Site. They did that last August when they bought out MobiPocket. Any E-Book that was for sale on Amazon.Com is now at MobiPocket, but getting that knowledge out to the readers is not always so easily done.

Getting good E-Readers is also crucial. The quality must be good and the device lightweight. The ones we have now need improvement, IMO. And then you have to wait for people to adjust their thinking about how they feel comfortable reading books. Most people tell me that they simply prefer to have a traditional paperback to read. But I am hopeful that when today's teens who are the avid gamers and IPod users decide to start reading seriously that they will adapt quickly to the E-readers. It will take a few more years, I suspect.
