Public vote numbers changing?

Okay, I admit, I keep my "View Submissions" page open in a tab and refresh it every now and then. It's silly, i know, but I like numbers. I like watching the number of votes go up, and the vote score change.

But I've noticed recently the "number of public votes" number has been going down. Not by much, only one or two a day, for, like, a week or so.

Any idea why public votes are going away like that?

I've noticed this on some of my recent stories, also. I can give a couple of possibilities, but these are pure guesses: 1) for some reason the last backup had to be reloaded, and so the last few votes are lost. 2) votes from "anonymous" sources expire after a certain amount of time (note: sometimes these seem to come back, also). 3) an algorithm takes out certain votes by certain posters.

Don't shoot me if I'm wrong on any of those... sheer speculation...

The Web site has a formula (not shared with the users) for periodically sweeping what it considers invalid votes from totals.

That makes sense. So far it seems to be working well. The total votes go down but the score goes up. I can live with that. ;)
