This feature has been around for a few months now, and I'm curious as to how it's working out for people.

Do you respond to public comments as you do to e-mailed feedback?

Have you removed any comments from your stories?

Has anyone tried leaving their own "anonymous" comments on their stories to start the ball rolling? (I'm sure no one has ;))

I like the public comments. It's kinda nice to see what would normally be private feedbacks out there for the wrold to see. Of course annon is no les brave in his public comments than his private ones.

I don't respond to public comments usually. I feel like if the person wanted a response they would drop a private feedback and most do.

Yes, I have removed a comment and will again. I wrote the story, I did the work, I see no reason to treat nasty PC's any differently than nasty annon feedback. I delete them and forget them. If Mr. Annon wants to let the world see his wit and charm he can write his own story.

Only made on comment on my own work, not annon, but it was easier than resubmitting an editied version of the story with an author's note.

I like the feature. Occasionally, I'll visit the last page of a large body of work to see what others have said about it. People who take the time to read it normally take the time to comment so it's a good indicator of whether or not I might be interested.

I've not yet had to delete any, but suppose it would depend on the comment and how I thought it affected a story. I once read through the PC list for a great writer here and someone had left a scathing review on her PC. The submission was actually a contest winner and had many of the most respected authors here listed in PC with wonderful comments, and there was this nasty one sitting right in the middle looking very out of place.

It was obvious to me that something was wrong with it, but when I wrote to her and asked about it she said it didn't bother her at all. (I kinda figured she'd want to delete it.) Turns out it was a personal attack driven by a disagreement in the forums and had naught to do with the actual story.

At any rate, I can see leaving a nasty one in the middle of a page full of rave reviews so that others can see how ridiculous and petty such comments seem. (Also, several people commented after the nasty remark to inform asshole of PC that they were obviously not aware of what they were talking about. :D)

I also like the boost a PC from a well respected author gives a story. There've been times when I wasn't going to read a story, for whatever reason, but then saw that someone I respected here had read it and commented favorably. More often than not, it motivates me to dive in and give it a read.

I rarely reply to Public Comments because most of them are very short and simple. (I actually have one that's titled something like WOW! and the public comment is nothing more than six exclamation points.) However, when someone takes the time to really comment on a story and not just tell me how they handled their arousal afterward, I definitely write back.

Wow, I'm wordy this morning. Sorry.

I have my public comments turned on. Actually on one story I have more public comments than I ever got feedback from. Interesting.

I try to go look every now and then at the public comments and if it is from someone here that I can look up and not anon, I will take the time to send them a email.

As far as removing, no, I would like to think that I would not remove even the bad ones. I believe I would not if they were a users name and not just anon. Now a bad review from anon, I would have to think twice about. I suppose it would depend on whether I think it is a sincere comment, even though bad, or just from some bored person/kid with a sadistic nature.

I have not tried to leave any anon here on my own story. However, I will admit to maybe somewhere sometime leaving a small review for a story that I might be trying to sell. Oops, I'm bad!

Public Versus Private Comments

I have always had feedback turned on, and turned on the public comment on my stories as soon as it was available, including all of the old ones. The old ones rarely get a comment, though.

For the most part, I've been pleased with the results and the commentary even though I haven't agreed with all of them and some of them were critical (some reasonably so and others not, according to my biased viewpoint).

I also haven't really noticed any falloff in private feedback after turning on the public option. I think there are two distinct groups of respondents, those who want to say something personal to the author, and those who want to tell others something about the author or the story. For the most part, the groups don't overlap much.

I have only deleted two public comments; one for being a less-than-charitable presonal comment towards the real person Michelle of the Training Michelle series, and one from someone who was clearly trying to pass himself off as someone else.

I've replied to a few of the comments, especially if I see the same person commenting on more than one story. With a few exceptions, I don't get any acknowledgement or other reply from the commenter, which is fine. No angst over that.

I think the way that the comment option works is a bit clunky, with the default set at a "50 degree" (aka 3) rating level. I've had several people say later that their 50-degree rating was accidental, from not being alert enough to change the rating before clicking send. I'd rather leave the rating unspecified, and make it take an explicit click to set it to what the respondent wants it to be.

On the whole, though, I like it.

I don't use the Feedback Portal, though. Perhaps it is because I have slackened off on reading other stories lately due to a time crunch, but I don't find myself going there when I do want something to read. I'll either go to the New list and scan for something interesting or the Top Lists in my favorite categories to see what has bubbled up in the first several pages that looks intriguing.

Hmmm, I don't recall if I do. I think I try to respond to public comments in the same way, but I can't be too sure.

I have removed one comment from someone I know. It was WAY over the top, and I am, well, humble sometimes.

I can't even vote on my own stories! Damn rule about voting from the same computer signature . . . even so, I doubt that I would leave ananymous comments - lol - kind of defeats the purpose to me.

I had someone leave a comment on all audio poems that had been posted in the same day. All of them in some way criticized my voice. One I had written about my youngest son and the person said that he hoped I didn't read to him while he was awake or I would scare him to death. Another said my voice sounded like cardboard. Those are just hurtful and spiteful comments and I deleted every last one of them. None of the comments said anything about the quality (or lack thereof) of the poems themselves.

Overall, I like the comments function, but like feedback, you can get some that are just nasty and hurtful and have nothing at all to do with the story itself.

people are mean

crim people here just cold hearted they like to leave bad feedbacks don't listen them I like your storys and poetry they are great I don't know what is peoples problems you write great stuff

Do you respond to public comments as you do to e-mailed feedback?

Yes, I do. I reply to each one. Maybe I'm just weird but I always PM the person who comments with at least a thank you note. If it's a bigger comment, talking about something specific in the story, it merits a bigger PM.

Have you removed any comments from your stories?

Not yet. But then maybe that is because I didn't get any really bad, hateful ones.

Has anyone tried leaving their own "anonymous" comments on their stories to start the ball rolling? (I'm sure no one has ;))

No, I haven't left any anonymous comments on my stories. I've replied to one anonymous person though, only because it really got to me and it was anonymous so I couldn't PM.

I like the public feedback option, but I've noticed less feedback through email after it was introduced. Is that usual or am I just writing boring stories?

I usually leave a public comment and email the author separately with feedback after reading a story. That's how it should be done. :)

LOST COMMENTS?

I've posted at least one comment that never posted. (No, the author didn't delete it; he never saw it.) I noticed that another reader posting a comment on the same story mentioned having posted it earlier, too.

Has anyone else heard from a reader whose public comment was submitted and never received?

public feedback

I don't like that public feedback that much but I love getting feedbacks in my email my story got alot of good feedbacks

May take a little while longer, and I may do it fewer times, but I do my best to at least send a thank you note or, better yet, leave a comment on their submissions.

Have you removed any comments from your stories?
Only one, one of the very first, from a friend who was a little bit too effusive. I PMed first, though, and the comment was made again, toned down a bit.

No, I haven't. Nice idea, though. :D

Juan, baby, There is no better life than that.

And please, hold on with the sick lesbian comments here. This is not your I-hate-lesbians thread. Please go back to yours if you can't hold it in.

OK, kids. I think the above two posts prove that Juan is an ordinary troll. The English does not match his posts on his anti-dyke thread; they've improved markedly above. He's getting utterly ignored by me from now on. I recommend same.

Perdita

p.s. reading him is like listening to anglo actors speak English with a phony Spanish accent, makes me barf.

I see you turned your public comments off today, juan. And I had just added mine this afternoon, too. Should I be offended?

Agreed on all counts.
