I'm looking for resources, preferably books, that discuss the psychology behind domination and submission as they relate to sexuality. I have this one which is a good place to start. I'm only half-way through it and have my own beliefs and experiences relating to being a dom and maybe someday a switch, but any outside sources are welcome.

I'm not necessarily looking for a s/m point of view, but I guess that cant be overlooked. I'm really, really interested in the brainworks of all this.

Suggestions?

Though not specifically only D/s, if you are interested in serious psychology reading you might try 'A Defence Of Masochism' by Anita Philips.

hmmmmm....my question is, why does there have to be some type of 'psychology' behind D/s??? *shrugs* maybe i'm reading the thread wrong but it seems everyone wants a reason why we like the things we like, how come then we dont' want the same reason's for why 'nilla's like what they like?? sorry to hijack but i really am curious......

It could be an interesting topic for someone looking for a PH.d. in Psych or something...

For me, it's mostly about power balance in life and deep cravings I only in the last few years could consciously realize and accept.

I don't know if this will help or not but I'm in a sex and gender course and my teacher talks a lot about sadomasochism. You could look up stuff by Lacan. He is like Freud and talks about breaking the hold of the ego and finding a connection with the Real. You could also look up Foucault "Sex, Power, and the Politics of Identity". I hope that helps.

...or you can try Dialectic of Enlightenment by Max Horkheimer et al.

There are many books out there addressing D/S and/or S&M.

Happy reading!!!

Delving into the psyche of Sadists

I have several non BDSM orientated books that cover the topic at least in part, mid renovating here , I'll dig some titles out a little later today and post them .

Thanks...Haven't re-read that one in quite a while..

My pleasure.

One carton unpacked and two books emerged.

Ideas In Psychoanalysis ~ Perversion
by Claire Pajaczkowska
Icon Books

Saturnalia ~ An Anthology of Bizarre Erotica
Nexus Books

The latter is not the exact genre the OP requested . However I have included it as a resource of both prose & literature within a context of a historical perspective . It also provides thought provoking editorial.

As I continue to unpack cartons and reconcile my collection I will add to this thread.

A strange thought just crossed my mind. If you seek reference materials on the of "Psychology of domination and submission" and are "not necessarily looking for a s/m point of view" then perhaps take any literature dealing with the evolution of formal religion and or strategy of War.
