The EX Dever City Attorney bought a laptop from a guy in a parking lot. The laptop was found using tracking software that recorded when the computer was logged onto the Internet and by whom. The laptop was stolen and they tracked down the buyer, the City Attorney. If you wonder if there is a criminal lawyer in Denver, the answer is yes. Comment?

City attorney resigns over stolen laptop

Denver City Attorney Lawrence Manzanares resigned Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007. City Attorney Larry Manzanares resigned today, four days after Mayor John Hickenlooper placed him on leave for possessing a computer that was stolen from the city last month.

Manzanares, formerly a county and district court judge, told authorities on Saturday he purchased the computer from a man in a parking lot sometime in January. Manzanares told the Denver Post he could not remember how much he paid for it.

Mayor John Hickenlooper accepted Manzanares' resignation this afternoon.

"We fully respect Larry's decision and wish him and his family the very best during this difficult time," the mayor said. "The fact that he did not want the ongoing investigation or questions surrounding this situation to interfere with the important

Work of the City Attorney's Office speaks to the character and integrity he demonstrated during his respected career as an attorney and District Court judge."

Manzanares was sworn in as Denver's City Attorney on January 4, 2007. Deputy City Attorney Arlene Dykstra will serve as Acting City Attorney until a new City Attorney is appointed by the mayor.

In a prepared statement, Manzanares said, "Current events which have been highlighted by the media have created an untenable distraction for the Mayor's office and the position of Denver City Attorney. The position of City Attorney should be uncompromised by such distractions, and it would be unfair to the City and to the many fine attorneys in the City Attorney's Office to allow such a situation to continue. Therefore, I believe it is in the best interests of the City and the City Attorney's Office that I resign my position as City Attorney. I have had very many well-wishers and supporters encourage me to ride out the storm, and while I am grateful for their support, I believe the continued effectiveness of the City Attorney's Office must come first."

The Gateway M280 computer, worth about $1,600, was reported stolen from a city storage locker on Jan. 26. City officials said it could have been stolen anytime between Jan. 1 and Jan. 26.

The computer was traced to Manzanares' home using tracking software that recorded when the computer was logged onto the Internet and by whom.

Officials from the Jefferson County District Attorney's office were brought in to investigate the incident.

Just goes to show you, always change the network card before you connect to the internet in any computer you buy in a parking lot. ;)

And make sure there is no tattle-tale software installed!

You would think that any stolen laptops purchased in a parking lot would be free of tracking software, sounds like he got swindled, he should report that parking lot to the Better Business Bereau.

Can't remember how much he paid for it a month ago...tchya...riiiight. I can remember how much I paid for mine, and I've had it for more than a year. If his meory is that bad his ass needs to be fired anyway. Personally, I think he's just a dumbass and stole it himself.

If you can't trust a parking lot, who can you trust?

I bought a "new" computer from Office Depot a few years ago. When I got it home, and did all the stuff to get it running, I found out it was full of some lawyer's files. Nothing too "legal"-that was all encrypted, but I did find out his personal expenses, Christmas card list, etc. The most interesting thing was a really pathetic raunchy screen saver - 2 color big square pixel-type cartoon of some ginourmous boobed floozie.
