Exactly how is protectionism failing to push China to the top?

At some point we have to look beyond ideas and beliefs and look at end results.

You mean ideas like basic human rights? Jobs like elevator operator in a four storey apartment building? Or an average income of 2,400 $ per annum (figure calculated from the average income stats of 2004)? The country might be at the top, the inhabitants sure aren't. Exploitation works of course, unfortunately generally not for the exploited.

I've been saying for years that China is proving to the world that capitalism - especially globalist capitalism - suffers where human rights are strong.

But protectionism is the nitro in their gas tank.

LJ fuckwit:-

Protectionism made the USA the 1st largest economy on earth.:D

Go away, cold weasel. You've got nothing to contribute except the hot air coming out of your brain.

Protectionism made and still makes the United States, Eurozone, Japan the largest producers of wealth of all-time. China is just following the path the US pioneered in the 19th Century. China is losing jobs to SE Asia due to the demands of a labor force who needs increased wages to consume more and more for the GDP to grow. It's pretty sexy. Human rights issues are resolved by organized labor and simple capitalistic materialism.

China is losing jobs to SE Asia because they lost their nerve. Their import tariffs are the #1 reason why those workers were ABLE to strike and get higher pay. If China slapped import tariffs on SE Asia the leakage would end, quickly.

Our lack of import tariffs against cheap-labor human rights hellholes like China are why raises for workers are a thing of the past (at least until we restore said tariffs).

OK LJR let me ask you a question citing a particular example.

Supposing I wanted to sell high speed passenger ferries to the Harbour Authorities in New York or San francisco, what tarriff protection might I have to overcome?

J knelt on the floor, unsure of what to do. The room was cool and there was a breeze from behind her, raising goose flesh on her exposed back and hardening her nipples. She watched with her nervousness slowly increasing as he pulled the silk scarf through his fingers. His eyes were on her, as if his hands were familiar enough with the work and needed no supervision. He tied the ends back on the scarf and formed two loops. The use for the loops was plain, but his next move puzzled her. He slipped his heavy ring from his finger and pulled the middle of the scarf through it, forming another loop. He rose from his chair and held his hands together in mock prayer. J quickly understood the command and raised her hands to imitate him. The loops went around her wrists and he pulled the slip knots tight. He pulled the ring down to her wrists, making the middle loop large enough to slip over her head. His fingers were warm and gentle as he pulled her hair up and out of the scarf. A shiver went through her as she felt the scarf tug against the back of her neck, pulled by the weight of her arms. He wrapped his hand in her hair, turned her face up to him, and kissed her softly.
His free hand slid the ring up to her neck, holding her snug. He stood up and considered his pet, naked, collared, and cuffed.

Good stuff, bronzeage:rose:

Wow. Just... wow.

I could spend years listing the ways in which China is different from Japan, economically speaking.

That's like comparing apples to..... the dust on Mars...

A clear indication that your understanding of demographics is pathetic.

Empty words from an empty, clueless mind.

China is a command based economy. They're not GOING to let what happened to Japan, happen to them. Government manages business, not the other way around. Difference #1.

Note how fast they came out with a stimulus plan as opposed to Japan, which tried austerity measures which sparked their Lost Decade. Difference #2.

Note that China is keeping their currency far lower than Japan's, compared to America. Difference #3.

China's import tariffs are higher. Difference #4.

China has no workplace safety laws or pollution controls. Difference #5.

Japan offshores to China, not vice-versa. Difference #6.

China has secured resources all over Africa, and is making moves to secure access to oil in other regions. Far moreso than resource-poor Japan has ever dreamed of. Plus they have their own oil reserves. Difference #7.

As I said, the economic situation in China is much different than that in Japan.

You can take this to the bank: China will not crash in your lifetime. In fact, you'd better start learning Mandarin.

You are overly impressed with dictatorship. What are you, eighteen? That command economy only controls Beijing and its surroundings. The farther you get from the capitol, the more local, corrupt officials matter. But all you are reading is numbers. Therefore there is nothing more to say to you. Bean counters know everything and understand nothing!

Translation: in your delusional universe, feelings and personal opinions trump hard facts. And I know enough to have accurately PREDICTED a huge number of major occurrences in the last ten years. Because unlike you I know the writing on the wall.

Enjoy your clueless, militantly ignorant life. You're still dead wrong.
