A goalkeeper kept on playing for ten minutes after not realising that his match had been called-off because of fog.

The keeper couldn’t see beyond his penalty area and claims he simply thought that his team was on the attack.

Richard Siddall told The Daily Star: "I didn't have a clue. I just stood there waiting for a player to come through the mist."

Siddall, between the sticks for Stocksbridge Steels, a Sunday League side from near Sheffield, was only told that the match had been abandoned by a fan ten minutes after his team-mates and their opposition, Witton Albion, had returned to the dressing rooms.

Stocksbridge manager Wayne Biggins, a former Sheffield Wednesday player, added: "We were in the dressing rooms but Richard thought we were still playing.

"Nobody had a clue where he was until it dawned on us that he must have still been on the pitch."

The goalkeeper stood there FOR TEN MINUTES before realizing something was wrong. Apparently, there is no discernible difference between soccer and just standing around.

I think it's even more telling that this thread fell off the first page without a reply & only 4 views, as if no one needed any proof.

Good point. I bet I'd have gotten more views with a "Proof water is wet" thread.

If it is so "mind numbingly boring", why is it one of the most popular sports in the world?

Also, in most countries, it's a Government sanctioned sport, most don't have any choice..

ermmm no

if by "sanctioned" you mean that the government say "hey this is a good game which many people like, we will give it some funding", then yes, i guess you are right... but as for not having a choice???? ermm not sure how you work that out. *boggle*

36.2 Watson to de Silva, two runs, cracking drive through the covers
36.1 Watson to Arnold, one run, turned to midwicket

Soccer Rulz, OK!!

Soccer, and the World Cup, is almost as big as the whole remaining Olympic movement. In Oz, despite the huge publicity given to both Rugby codes, their total involvement, players and fans together, is less than the number of Soccer players alone on the East Coast of Oz . . . and we are one of the small countries . . . :D

Please Duckie . . . no more cricket gibberish . . . it's bad enough that we cannot escape from it on Oz ABC Radio . . . :D

Of course it's fucking boring when it's a Sunday League team from sheffield, or anywhere else for that matter. A bunch of chubby accountants who play once a week - losers buy the beer at the pub afterwards - is hardly thrilling.

But when 2.5 billion people watch the World Cup Final, you don't tend to take whining criticism from yanks very seriously.

Look at it this way, your regional sports like american football, baseball and basketball may be played all over the world (just like the States have leagues and a national team for cricket and european handball) but if they were any good, then why haven't they conquered the world? Because they're crap and they take 3 hours.

Hell, the final of the European Championship gets three times as many viewers than the SuperBowlthingy.

Quite possibly the most amusing and misinformed post of the week!

Personally, I have no desire to watch 22 men in tight jerseys and tiny shorts running around and showing off their 'athletic legs.'

And I tend to stay away from men who do like watching that sort of thing.

Well away.

:)

Tight jerseys and tiny shorts!? That was the 80's! Uniforms have changed. Try and keep up.

I still have no interest in watching men being athletic though

Oh, I get it. You were one of those unfortunates who was always picked last at school and you're still bitter.

:p

Absolutly not!

I stopped being bitter years ago!

That's odd. I always thought that Aussie's spoke English. Oh well, live and learn.

I was brought up playing and watching baseball. I understand the subtleties and nuances of the game, and I enjoy it thoroughly. I was not, however, brought up playing or watching soccer (football to you non-Americans), so I do not understand the subtleties and nuances, and I find it exceedingly boring. To those of you from the UK, Australia, or, indeed, most of the rest of the world, the opposite is true.

I started this thread as a tongue-in-cheek way of kind of nudging my fellow Americans (aka "soccer haters"), and saying "Hey, soccer's really boring, check this out." This was not intended as a serious "Let's bash soccer" thread. But I am amused at how some people got their panties in a bunch. Carry on.
